Be ware of motorite clauses in underwriting
I service my car at more than regular intervals if something sounds a little off I take my baby to have it looked at.
To say the least, I am rather anal with my car. Because I bought a 2008 model Mini Cooper S Clubman I thought it wise to buy a Motorwrite policy to cover me in the event of anything major. A light for the turbo appeared on my dash and we immediately took action. Keep in mind that prior to this light coming on it was in perfect running order having replaced a oil seal just 2 weeks prior.
We called Motorite to find out what procedure was and we were told to take it to the dealer for a diagnostic test to and after the dealer will contact them to liaise. Great right........ Turns out not so great. The diagnostic they wanted to be done is also something they don't pay for. Something that was also neglected to tell me with the first call.
Well, that rainy day came nearly a year after I bought my car and a quote was generated by the dealer for repairs to the value of R43000.00. In my view that is major. (Keep in mind I paid R150 000.00 for my car bringing the cost to nearly a third of the value i paid for ) Ok, so it was submitted to Motowrite and surprise surprise.
Whilst most of the parts that were needed was covered it was not covered all at once. So what I understand is if it was just the turbo that would be fine but because it was more than just that only one part would be covered and at their discretion. turns out they paid around R6875.00 of the claim leaving me with the balance. In my view is sly underwriting and not at all what I expected. What happens when you snap a conrod and smack the head?
Only one or the other will be paid. To run a motor is an event of chain reactions that fit very snugly into each other how for the love of all that is holy can you differentiate like this and given this how can you tell me that I have cover to the value of R100 000.00 no one part of the labour can ever cost that. No, I feel done in and taken for a ride by these guys why not explain it like that when the policy is sold. It clearly is underwritten to ***** the consumer and only enrich the insurance company.
Keep in mind you have to keep your car in good order as any failure to keep it in good nick can and will result in you also having no claim.
Apon purchasing this vehicle I bought this policy and a top up policy on the motor and now I am being told that you will only cover around R6874.56 of the R43871.59. I can understand that you won't pay for certain items but the bulk of the bill is being passed over. We called in and was told to take the car to the dealer and they must do a diagnostic test and then call you the rest will be handles. Now you won't pay for the diagnostic test as well, this was done as per your instruction? This policy it endorsed by MFC and I was assured that it will cover everything other than things like CV joints and wheel bearings, oil, fuel and Tyres, etcetera that is for my account but major issues with the engine would be covered.
I did everything in my power to make sure that with a major break I would be covered and yet here I find myself with the bill that exceeds 1 third of the value of my vehicle. I had my vehicle serviced and kept in good running order taking it to the mechanical workshop with even small issues that looked suspicious.
See below and beware of this when you purchase a policy like this to not be caught in the same trap I was caught in myself. I am extremely unhappy about the whole situation and find it wholly unacceptable. I, unfortunately, spoke to some other consumers that had much the same experience it seems to be a trend and one I won't be caught in again.
"Good Afternoon,
Please take note that this warranty is a parts basket warranty and not unlimited cover. Furthermore, as the vehicle is a 2008 model, it qualifies for benefit 4 as per the attached policy wording and the claim has been administered according to the policy wording and the terms and conditions.
Regrettably, the items mentioned in the authorization letter, which are not covered, was unfortunately rejected due to the following reasons:
1. Turbo , Fuel Pump And Vacuum Pump Rejected For More Than One Failure
page:8 clause: Important
Important Notes: More Than One Failure At The Same Time In The Event That Two Separate Components From Two Separate Component Categories Fail Simultaneously, The Component With The Highest Cost (more Expensive Component Failure) Will Be Covered Up To The Maximum Benefit Limit As Stated In The Limits Of Liability Table Or To The Quoted Cost Of The Repair (whichever Is The Lesser). Only One Component Per Claim Will Be Entertained. We Shall, At Our Discretion, Apply The MaxLimit Clause, As Per The Limits Of Liability For The Covered Component. Repairs To The Remaining Failed Part(s) Will Be For Your Own Account Should MaxLimit Not Be Allowed.
2. Diagnostics And Car Wash Not Covered
page:10 clause:24 para:h
(h) You Are Responsible For Paying The Administrator Or Manufacturer Approved Dealership Any Amount Over The Approved Amount, As Well As For Any Other Dealership Charges For Which We Are Not Liable;
3. Sump Seal And Tappet Cover Seal Not Covered
page:9 clause:20 para:b
(b) Services, Maintenance Items, Seals, Oil Leaks, Cambelt Replacement, Drive Shaft Boots And Drive Shaft Failure As A Result Of Worn Or Damaged Boots Or Covers, Brake And Clutch Friction Surfaces, V-belts, Fan Belts And Auxi****y Equipment;
4. Service Items Not Covered
page:9 clause:20 para:b
(b) Services, Maintenance Items, Seals, Oil Leaks, Cambelt Replacement, Drive Shaft Boots And Drive Shaft Failure As A Result Of Worn Or Damaged Boots Or Covers, Brake And Clutch Friction Surfaces, V-belts, Fan Belts And Auxi****y Equipment;
5. Wiper Blades Not Covered
page:9 clause:20 para:a
20 Items Not Covered By This Policy We Are Not Liable For: (a) All Parts Not Listed Under Parts Covered In Clause 19;
6. Consumables Not Covered
page:9 clause:20 para:c
(c) Replacement Or Repair Of All Service Items That Need Changing At Specific Or Regular Intervals. For Example: Oil, Grease, Filters, Hydraulic Fluid, Additives And Antifreeze, Spark Plugs, Points, Condenser And Consumables;
