WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!

I was originally a member of fitness first at hemmingways, East London. As clients we were never told that it would be under new management and we all had to sign new contacts. I signed all the new contracts under Motion fitness and read through it with a fine tooth comb. When I had initially asked about cancellation, the sales rep assured me that I just need to give 1 months written notice - as it states in the contact. A few months go by and I am unhappy at the gym so I query about cancelling my contract and wrote out my letter in November 2016. the manager at motion fitness in Hemmingways then tells me that I need to pay 80% remainder of my contact as I am not yet finished my 12 month contract. I ask her to show me where it states that in the contact, nothing is mentioned about it. She then proceeds to tell me that she will contact her head office, calls me to say that I indeed need to pay the 80%, I then again I ask her to show me where it states that. She can't. Motion Fitness can not say I am liable for 80% of the remainder term of my contract if nothing is stated in the original contract that I signed. I had to keep on calling her to find out what is happening as she would not give me the Head Offices number. What is she hiding that she won't give it to me? Has she even put my cancellation through? I am getting so sick and tired of always calling to follow up when I am the customer! Still to this day, I have heard nothing back from her just that she will contact the head office. To make matters worst, my debit order comes off on the 1st of December then I wake up and see another debit order for the same amount has come off. I end up going to motion fitness to speak to the manager and surprise she is not there. The lady at the front desk informs me that it is a yearly levy charge! Nobody me motioned this to me at the begging? I will request a refund and definitely fight to cancel my contract. I will never recommend anybody to sign up to the gym. So if top management reads this, please can somebody inform me as to why it takes almost a month to cancel a contract and hear no feedback!

Good Afternoon Amy,
Please accept our apologies for any frustration that this situation may have caused.
When you enrolled, part of the process was explaining the membership options and the features thereof. One of the benefits of your membership is the transfer option. This is available to you and you may take up this option if for what ever reason you can not continue with your membership during its minimum duration. You will need to find the person to transfer it across to and your membership will need to be current, but once you find that person to transfer it across to, all you need to do is to bring that person into the club with you, we will transfer it across to the new member and cancel your current membership.
If you can not find someone to take it over, which shouldn't be a problem as we transfer numerous memberships monthly then you can cancel the membership by paying the cancellation fee, which has now been reduced to 50% of the outstanding balance.
The two debit orders that you are referring to in your complaint in December is the normal monthly debit order and the annual levy that is due each December. This will have also been explained at the time you took out your membership, this would have been signed for on the terms and conditions as well as the presentation that was done for you and a copy of your membership agreement with the terms and conditions on would have been given to you when you enrolled.
