making students pay hefty fees

I recently joined Motion Fitness Gym in Worcester and was thrilled by all the perks they had, like cycling classes, bootcamps and water aerobics. I signed my gyming contract less than 6 months ago.. I was a waitress at the time and explained this to the consultant. I told him that I do not make a fixed amount of money. He reassured me that he would get me the best deal possible for 24 months at R367 per month.. I lost my job recently and had to go to the gym with my tail between my legs to cancel my gym contract. The gym then went on to tell me that I can cancel my contract but at a cost. I have to pay a cancellation fee of R8257 which I find ridiculous. I am unemployed and will become a student soon. If I had known at the time that I was going to lose my job I would not have signed it in the first place.. I would seriously not recommend this gym to anyone. I've paid my account to date, not missing a single payment and they've made sure since they deduct it from my account. Tomorrow (1 December 2015) my last money will leave my account , thats my last R 280.61 and it'll cross over into a minus amount, but hey as long as they get their pound of flesh right?

Hello SomeoneImportant,

Hi Arlene,

The membership that the consultant sold you was in fact the best option for you, the longer the membership, the cheaper the monthly fees are. In an instance such as the one you currently find yourself in, which no doubt was unforeseen and we are sorry to hear of your misfortune, we do have two solutions for you. First is the cancellation fee, this is more for the member who is working and needs to relocate, however we do have an alternative solution for you. You may transfer your membership to some else, you need to find that person to transfer it across to but we will take care of the rest for you. In order for the transfer to take place the membership needs to be current. We are not after a pound of flesh, we have options for you to resolve the situation but as with all agreements that are entered into, they need to be honoured on both side.
