Subject: Complaint Regarding the Use of Credit Scores in Determining Insurance Premiums

Dear MiWay Insurance Customer Service,

I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with your company's practice of utilizing credit scores as a determinant for insurance premiums. This approach disproportionately affects individuals from lower-income backgrounds, effectively penalizing them for their financial status, which I find deeply unjust.

It is widely acknowledged that credit scores are not indicative of an individual's driving capabilities. Relying on them to set insurance premiums unfairly burdens those who may already be facing financial hardships, perpetuating a cycle of poverty. This methodology mirrors discriminatory practices observed in the banking sector, where marginalized communities have been subjected to prejudicial treatment.

For instance, in South Africa, allegations have surfaced against financial institutions like WesBank and First National Bank (FNB) for charging Black clients higher interest rates compared to their white counterparts. Investigations revealed that Black customers were often subjected to inflated interest rates, leading to significant financial disparities. CITIZEN.CO.ZA CITIZEN.CO.ZA

Similarly, in the United States, lawsuits have accused banks such as Wells Fargo and HSBC of steering Black borrowers towards subprime mortgages, even when they qualified for better rates. These practices resulted in Black homeowners paying substantially more over time compared to white homeowners with similar financial profiles. CBSNEWS.COM

Implementing a system that ties insurance premiums to credit scores not only perpetuates financial inequities but also raises ethical concerns reminiscent of these discriminatory practices. I urge MiWay Insurance to reconsider this policy and adopt fairer assessment criteria that do not disproportionately disadvantage economically vulnerable individuals.

I look forward to your response and hope for a reevaluation of this policy to ensure equitable treatment for all clients.

No, I am not disappointed, as your client I am repulsed, I am not certain when you brought in this absolutely discriminatory practice but I'll be moving my policies out of sheer disgust. My credit score is close to 700, so you'd think why did I bother writing you then? Well, what of the people who have never been in any accidents, they get penalised simply for struggling financially or being poor? What world are you living in, the guy in Cape Town who wrote-off a Mclaren will get a better rate from you than Lerato who's never been in a crash but is poor? What demented Amercanisation of this industry is this garbage? I am truly resentful that you are purposely penalising people for being poor!! Jesus!

Dear MiWay

Based on your current treatment of those in financial destress and penalising them for being POOR -

Change you Slogan from: We go out of our way, so that you can live your way!

To: YOU'RE POOR, PAY MORE!!!
