MIway the slyway
Took out household and vehicle insurance cover last year. Had an incident beginning of the month where my dogs and a neighbours dog came into my house and went destructive. They thorn my couches, knocked over or tv and amplifier and what looked like knocked our washing machine and tumble dryer. And to top it off, on the same day, I dropped our other tv by mistake.Submitted claim with Miway and after the assessors came to collect the TV's and the amplifier, checked the washing machine and tumble dryer, received a call a week later by a Mr Stephan, who is the "Manager of assessments" from Miway in the western Cape. Mr Stephan informed us that he too, also needs to come to our house for a second assessment (what an inconvenience). This Stephan guy came and stated to my wife and I that he merely is there to make sure that we receiving the proper cover and under no way is he there to negatively influence our claim or cover. He wanted us to explain to him the incident. we explained it to him, and my wife also mentioned that the neighbour's dog was also with our dogs in the house, and you can see the white hair of this dog still on our couches(We have a grey and a black dogs). He then proceeded by asking us to list all the items in our house and estimate prices for all items. We listed the items, and while doing so, he continuously influenced our prices by increasing their values. One example of this is that I mentioned to him that my son has a Samsung S7, he told me that the S7 is discontinued, and he will put down the price of a S10 that cost R14000 (S7 is about R3000). To my surprise, we had to list our clothing and shoes as well(I thought we took out household goods insurance and not clothing and shoe insurance). The total of all the items and clothing and stuff came to R240000 (I never thought I was this rich as I don't have very expensive furniture and clothing). the guy then took out his laptop, played me a recording for the date when I took out the insurance. He specifically played me the part where the consultant inform me that " should I have a valid claim, and they find out that I'm under insured, they will pay me out pro-rata. He told me that when I took out the insurance, I took cover for R100 000 household goods and now my items are valued at R240 000. He told me that the onus is on the client to inform Miway of all changes and the correct cover when taking out insurance. and sould my claim be possible, will I only receive a portion of my claim(eg. Should my claim amount to successful for R10000, then I will only be receiving R10000**** minus access of R1500 which comes to R2666 that I will receive). He then continued and told me that the lady who sold me the insurance informed me that I should read my policy documents because in the documents it states that should your own pets destroy your goods, you will not receive cover. and only glass surface items are anyway covered by accidental damage. He then left. He phoned my wife the next day, informed her that our claim will be unsuccessfull and that we **** because the broken couches are old bite and tear marks and our couches are dirty and stink. He the called me to inform me of the same. I told him the following: he came to our house with false pretences and that he amped prices deliberately so that all our claims can be pro-rata'd if successful. I also told him that he should listen to his voice recordings where my wife mentioned that the neighbours dog was also in the house. I told him that when the consultant informed me of the under insured issue, I was of the opinion that should I have a total loss of lets say R120000 and im only covered for R100000, that they will only pay out R20000. I also told him that when do a person ever read fine print on any contract, I was told that the information supp**** to me over the fone is the same information on the docs that's why I never even bothered to read the documents. I also told him that why did he come to us with false pretence to us and why didn't he come to us when they sold the insurance to us to make sure we covered correctly and not afterwards when we want to claim. my dogs are not kept in the house, and if y mistake come into our house and destroy stuff, that it is not seen as a accident but on purpose. Im really disappointed with Miway and think they should've been more clear in the beginning and not accept instalment before this Stephan guy comes out and do a proper assessment before insurance are granted and make sure people are covered for the correct goods and not come afterwards and find fault and interfere with clients claims negatively.
