Miway not good for the elderly
I expressly - per email in other words in writing cancelled my mom's policy(she is 78 years old) - and moved to Discovery little less than a month ago due to Miway's overall incompetence. 1st they ignored my attempts to contact them in writing and only when I wrote them a bad review here, did they contact me. Our kitchen door had been blown off and damaged beyond repair by a strong wind. I needed to claim as the damage ran into thousands - eventually close to R6000. Shortly after the wind, I also had damage on my phone which would also have cost thousands however I decided to not claim for that even though it was specifically covered. When a certain lady eventually DID get round to contacting me, the process was tedious at best. It seems Miway doesn't like it when you don't use their service providers. They wanted a damage report from the handyman who did the work on our door - it took me some time to get a hold of him and when I did he unfortunately wrote a report by hand and in Afrikaans. The handwritten note I agree, was unacceptable and unprofessional and I let the handyman know that in no uncertain terms. Over a period of 3 or so days, I managed to get a proper report out of him. As for Afrikaans: just because he can write, doesnt mean he can speak/write English and, last time I checked, we had 11 official languages. As days and then weeks dragged by we accepted that the claim wouldn't go through and I again in writing let Miway know that they must not charge my mom's account again as we are DONE with them. One would think that they are semi-decent. The thing is that I didnt offer them right from the beginning, an ultimatum of: if you don't put the claim through, we are leaving. I said right from the beginning that we are ending our relationship with Miway. Two days ago, my mom said that the lady had called and I should call her back which I didnt do, For me it's case closed. Keep your money and stop taking hers - easy no rocket science. Well what do you know this morning Fri, 2 April 2021, I see Miway debited her account the full R2175.28 like nothing happened and our relationship with them had not ended. My mom is 78 years old as Ive mentioned - she would never have been able to go through this process. I wonder how bad it is for other elderly people who have to work with you lot Miway? Incidentally our lawyer is coming over later this afternoon to see his grandmother and then we will see if this doesn't constitute theft because it sure feels like theft to me. Or maybe it's when it's old people you deal with you treat them like this anyway hoping that they wouldn't have energy to try get their money back. I called Miway this morning when I discovered the money gone as it's Easter weekend and people are coming over for visiting and now my mom sits with R2000 because Discovery Insurance which is CHEAPER than you and much more clued up than Miway, will be debiting her account as well tonight. Which will leave her with R200 roughly. Until Tuesday, there is nothing we can do. I am unemployed so I can't help her. Youve completely *****ed a 78 year old lady over. Policy? I want this to be fixed immediately. Actually now that I can't go shopping, I'll search if there is an ombuds who can deal with this. PS: for the record I also want to mention that when a car drove into me some time ago, my excess was R5000 and I HAD to use Miway's service provider in Strand-Somerset West. When I wanted to pick up the vehicle, they refused to let it go as they had a valet - which I had not ordered - done on it and I had to pay R850 before they let it go. I reported this to Miway and nothing was done. R850!!! Which makes me think that one should take insurance out on Miway just in case they run you in. Insured against your insurance.
