Disappointment with Mitsubishi Motors SA
I have had a very disappointing experience with my Pajero Sport 4x4 from new and Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, which I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar? I purchased a Pajero Sport 4 x4 in 2014 and from the day I took delivery of it on the 4th July 2014 the car has been a huge disappointment. We drove down to Dullstroom that weekend all excited with big plans to do 4x4 trips into Botswana, Namibia etc. The trip to and back from Dullstroom was most disappointing as not only did the vehicle emitted huge clouds of black smoke on pull off or when gearing down and accelerating, the fuel consumption was ********** at over 14,6L/100km. (To put this into perspective I had traded in my much loved Kombi Caravelle 2.5 TD for the 4x4 where we did many trips to Dullstroom as my in-laws lived there for 10 odd years. The Kombi's fuel consumption was in and around 8.2L/100km on that same route each time. On long trips to CT, loaded up too, the Kombi got as low as 7.2L./100km.) On our return on the Monday morning I immediately call the Sandton Dealership and spoke to Lishen the sales manager who I purchased the car through. His response was it will improve vastly and from 5000km it will be operating in around 8,5L/100km on the open road and around 10,5L./100km around town. It never has. Nothing changed over the next 3 months with the turning point coming in the September 2014 where I attended the free Protea 4x4 course as was offered. The owner Jannie Rykaart took me aside after the course and advised me to get my car checked out and the engine possibly remapped as something is not right with it as its smoking very excessively compared to all others and his own that he has seen. As I got little joy from the Sandton Dealership with the fuel consumption (the 70L tank range around town is +- 500km) and the excessive smoking, I turned to Mitsubishi Motors SA for assistance. The senior technician Ari arranged for the vehicle to be assessed by Cargo Motors Edenvale where it was found to not be operating to specification and Ari authorised for the turbo and fuel injectors to be replaced under warranty. This was the beginning of a number of 'fixes' under warranty over the next 4 years namely, - the turbo and fuel injectors replaced only in the January 2015, as they had to be shipped out from Japan. This resulted in no change to the fuel consumption or excessive smoking. - authorisation was then granted for a new ECU under development to be put into my car the moment it became available mid-2015. - in the interim in the March 2015 they loaded my ECU with some 'test' software which once again made no difference to the fuel consumption or smoking but marginally improved the turbo lag on pull off. - the new developed ECU unit was finally installed in the November 2015 and sadly again it made little difference to the poor fuel consumption or excessive smoking. - in April 2016 Sandton Mitsubishi took one last attempt to improve the fuel consumption by sending my vehicle to Ironman 4x4 to have the software more accurately set and the engine remapped. This certainly improved the vehicles performance but still little to no change to the fuel consumption or the excessive smoking. - in March 2017 there was a recall on certain engines for overheating testing, which mine was one of them. It went in for a day or so for testing where it passed the test. - however a week later we went camping up to Mookgophong and 40km from our destination the engine overheated. - this resulted in my vehicle being out of action for 2 months, April and May 2017, where the engine block and head assembly complete was replaced under warranty. From when Mitsubishi Motors SA got involved in the September 2014 I have periodically appealed to them to please consider changing my vehicle, as clearly there is something amiss with it as none of the all parts replaced under warranty or software upgrades has resulted in any improvements to the fuel consumption or excessive smoking. Due to the poor fuel consumption this vehicles has cost me dearly in fuel costs over the last 4 and half years. I took one last attempt now in November 2018 in appealing to Mitsubishi Motors SA if they could please see their way clear, (after all the ongoing issues and disappointment I have had with my car and the trust and faith I put in the brand by purchasing a Pajero Sport in the first place), to financially assist and contribute by trading in my vehicle directly with them on either a demo or test Pajero Sport in the new spec where I am able to finance up to a maximum of R200K. They have responded that the best they can offer is the recent Black Friday deal of less R70K off the retail price of R620K, so R550k. The current normal dealership offer on a new Pajero Sport 4x4 is R574k. So after trade-in looking at R280-R300K to finance which unfortunately is out of my reach. Apology for the long story but needed to get this out there as this experience with Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has certainly left a bitter taste in my mouth. Kind regards and a happy festive season to all and a prosperous 2019.
