Microsoft 8.1 update kills network connection

Microsoft forced my laptop to upgrade to 8.1. Since then I am unable to connect to any network. I have searched the internet and there are many people complaining about the same thing. Why is Microsoft Windows so poor and why do we continue to use this poor software. Now I have to pay for support to get it fixed.
