Insane costs (R46k versus R13k from another workshop for an engine overhaul) and communication is poor!
Very disappointed but not really surprised that Michanic turned out to be what one would expect.
I think the concept of Michanic is great but their Communcation level is poor and their costs are insane!!
At first, the service was great.
We had a mechanic come and diagnose our vehicle that wasn't starting, we paid R775 and booked for the following day. The booking was confirmed, however 5 mins before they were expected to arrive, they called to reschedule for the following day - that's fine, we accepted, and they did indeed show up the next day and did what they needed (even though they say that if we cancelled 24 hours before the booking, we would be charged R250 but they seem to be free to mess around with our time, with no consequences. They should refund us R250 every time they reschedule)
The mechanic that came that day wasn't very open to giving feedback, it was like he was there for the diagnosis and nothing more (mechanic names Mandla) - that's fine, we were just happy to be moving forward with the car and we thought we'd get more feedback from Michanic but of course, that didn't happen.
I got the report the same day which said that there was no compression. The following day, we received a quote to strip our engine to further investigate - but no one called me to discuss further details or why or what or anything. BUT, we decided fine, we have to get this done, let's do it - we paid R2675
They called the morning of the booking and said they couldn't make it, so they rescheduled for the following day - this is the second time this has happened but again, it's fine, we let it slide.
They arrived the following day, it was a different mechanic to the first one - they stripped the car and this mechanic gave a lot more information to us than the first, he answered question and showed us a lot so that was great (mechanic named Promise) so we felt good about it and were confident we would get our car sorted. They left the car stripped and placed the parts in boxes (provided by us) so that nothing went missing.
After they left, we hoped to get the report but didn't get it, I followed up the following day and the mechanic said he was busy but the staff at Michanic said the mechanic was struggling with the app (not sure who was lying and who was telling the truth).
The mechanic also asked us for a photo of the disc that morning because he forgot to take a photo and no one was home to take the photo but nonetheless, we made a plan as we didn't want to wait long for the quote to fix the car - but to our frustration, we only got the report and the quote 2 days later ANYWAY, which was 3 days after they stripped the car.
The report stated that we needed and engine overhaul and when we got the quote, the quote was a whopping R46 022.38!!
We expected the cost to be high as we knew there was something big wrong with the vehicle, but we didn't except R46k high!
The worst thing about this was that no one called us to discuss our options or the process or give any kind of guidance or feedback. I had to phone to discuss some parts on the quote but all I was told was "that's what's on the report from the mechanic so we quote accordingly".
From the quote, the parts itself were R38 026.62 and the labour was R6 325 AND they included a minor service which was R1 495.76.
We know parts are expensive, but we weren't given any options - for example, would we have been comfortable with generic parts or what could we substitute etc.
By that point I was just seriously frustrated. We were expected to pay A LOT of money and there was no guidance or assistance or anyone that was prepared to phone us and talk us through anything really. (no one to-date as called to discuss our options.)
We decided to get another opinion from another mechanic - who also informed us that we needed an engine overhaul which matched Michanics report (so in that respect, Michanic did their job right which I didn't doubt, it was the lack of communication and the absurd costs that pushed me to seek another opinion).
However, we were quoted for everything that Michanic quoted and including labour only R13 500.
This mechanic came highly recommended by a few people in our circle and so we decided to use them. They got the job completely done within a day and now our car - that has been standing, not able to start for 5 months - is FINALLY running and in excellent condition. We have driven her every day since and so far, have not encountered any issues. They also did everything at our house!
Plus, they also give a 6 month warranty and it only cost R13 500!!! And not R46 000 Michanic quoted.
For anyone wanting to use Michanic - Please know that every time you use them, you will get a different mechanic because they are the middleman and outsource services to various workshops in your area (also adding significant markup)
So unless you are doing a quick major or minor service or something smaller and simpler - then they are not the company you want to use.
I am sure that for the above-mentioned services (major, minor, simpler stuff) they would be great but if your car has more serious issues or require an engine overhaul like ours did, do not use them.
Be that as it may, we are thrilled to know that your car is sorted and drives like a dream, as it is what we also want for you.

You did strip our car lol, as per our indusrty standard and we didn't even question that R2600 we paid to you for stripping our vehicle. We paid and moved forward, as per our detailed post.
You clearly do not even know who of your customers we are (you have only been provided with the name "Nadine" so what investigation did you do to find out which unhappy customer we are?)...
... Instead, you have come up with some bizarre explanation that doesn't even exist between us and Michanic.

You say you "told us we needed the car to be stripped", yes, but FOR YOUR INFORMATION, you never phoned us regarding the stripping of the vehicle, we didn't even question it, we paid immediately, and you came and stripped our car so what stories are you telling here?
And THIRDLY, you never ever talked to us about the overhaul. Other than the general conversation we had with the mechanic after he already stripped the car, no one from Michanic EVER called us.

No one from your offices has EVER called us to discuss the overhaul. I had to phone the office PERSONALLY and I spoke to Desmond, told him that a few things that was quoted was already done and that it didn't need to be done and he told me "It's on the report and you quote as per the report". I then told him that it is very OVERPRICED and that was it. We never discussed estimates, no one (other than the mechanic who said it could cost around R20k, which we anticipated)
No one from the offices ever, ever, ever spoke to us about rough price for the car or anything else other than the call we made ourselves which was brief - so NO, NO ONE EVER SAID A ROUGH RANGE BETWEEN R8000 and R40 000 - you guys are hilarious.
But that isn't even the just of the whole issue, the issue is the rest of the details in our post that you seemed to have overlooked and then still have a nerve to reply, firstly saying we were never quoted (how do you know by the name "Nadine" as it's the only information we provided?) clearly with the above references, we were quoted for the overhaul.
... then implying our car wasn't stripped and saying you gave us estimates lol - our car was stripped by you, by your mechanic Promise - which I do mention in the damn post - it's so obvious you guys didn't do any investigation into who we are, to possibly try rectify our complaints, you just typed up a response to make yourselves look good. Take time and READ our post. We detailed everything to help you better understand our complaint. But instead of reading, you jump to a reply which doesn't even make sense and now you're trying to make us look like the issue!
