Unhappy/Disappointed Client

I have a funeral policy with Metropolitan which covers all my family members, my parents and my parents in law. Now my father passed away on the 31 of August 2023. I called my Advisor to notify her she sent me a claim form to fill and send back. On Monday I was told my claim has been submitted and I will get a call to confirm all my details. When they eventually called on Monday during the day and I was informed that the year on the death certificate does not match the one on their system therefore they will have to restructure the policy to see how much they will offer me I waited for the call because they said they will get back to me the same day to let me know of the outcome but they never did. On Tuesday I called my advisor to let her know she was also surprised to hear that, I asked her to make a follow up because I need that to go and pay the mortuary on Wednesday before 12. She informed me that that the head office is still busy with my case and I should relax she also informed them that I needed the funds ASAP. Wednesday passed without any call from Metropolitan. On Thursday morning on my way to the branch I got a call from them offering me R17589.00 from R30000.00 that I was suppose to get, they asked me if I accept the offer or not I declined it because I wanted to understand how did they get to that amount. Went to the branch they called their head office I was told my advisor said it was not her fault I am the one that gave her that date and that is the only amount they will offer me. At that time the mortuary was waiting for me to pay I had to accept whatever amount even though I was not happy. They promised I will get the funds after an hour after signing the acceptance letter because since Monday I told them I needed to pay the mortuary but I only received the funds late afternoon on Thursday I could not pay again on that day. My dad was born 18/12/1956 on their system the advisor captured 18/12/1959. When she came to my house to write this policy I gave her all the copies of the people I wanted to cover but now when they ask her she said I am the one that gave her the wrong information hence they decided that i will not get the whole cover amount because its my fault. If I had given information without any papers I would accept that I made a mistake but I gave copies of Id's and birth certificate to capture. So now I had to suffer the consequences of someone fault. I asked for the printout of my policy document only to find out again that my wife's, stepdaughter's, both my parents in law's surnames are incorrectly written only the extended surname is correct. I believe I should get all my cover amount because clearly this was not my fault because the are other errors besides this one that cost me R12 000.00. I am very disappointed and hurt.

Dear Kereng

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.

We regret to learn of the death in your family.  Our sincere condolences go out to you and your family during this trying time.

We always strive to serve all our clients well and are sorry to read that you encountered difficulties with your claim.

Please note that in order to assess the risk of insuring a person's life we need accurate information.  If the date of birth for any insured person is incorrect on a policy, it could mean that we are receiving a premium that is too little to provide for the cover level the client app**** for.  When send out the policy documentation to our clients when the policy is issued or amended, it is not only for their records, but also so that they may check that we have the correct information on the policy.

If a claim occurs and we can see that the insured person was older than we thought, our actuaries needs to be consulted to determine what the amount of cover the premium that we were receiving would have bought the insured on that plan, had we had the correct information from the start through  interpolation.

This being said, one of our Escalation Specialists will investigate your allegation and revert back to you as soon as possible.

Regards

Client Care Team
