TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE WITH MY FUNERAL POLICY CLAIM

In early June 2025, my family and I suffered the devastating loss of our beloved mother. During such a profoundly painful time, I found some comfort in knowing that I had a funeral policy with Metropolitan — a policy I had faithfully maintained for 24 years and 5 months. I believed this would provide some relief and support in our time of need. Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be one of the most traumatic and distressing episodes I’ve had to endure, made worse by the very institution I trusted to help me through it.

After submitting the claim, I received a list of required documents — all of which needed to be certified. This was expected and understandable. My mother passed away due to complications following a heart attack, which required a lengthy and difficult operation. Despite all efforts, she did not survive the procedure. The emotional toll of losing a mother is indescribable and cannot be measured in words.

I was under the impression that, even if only a fraction of the funeral costs were covered, it would be some consolation — a small but meaningful acknowledgment of the bond and the commitment I had maintained with my insurer. I was wrong.

The attending doctor provided a comprehensive, certified postmortem report detailing the cause of death. A police declaration was also issued by SAPS, referencing the doctor’s report and confirming that all legal and procedural steps had been followed by the medical team. However, the sergeant who completed the declaration was not present at the time of death or the postmortem. He re**** entirely on the certified medical documents to validate the details.

There is a section on the police declaration form that asks for a brief description of the incident, with the note: “if possible.” Given the circumstances, it was not possible — the sergeant based his declaration solely on the official documentation, as he was not a direct witness.

I submitted the full set of documents, including the declaration. However, I received a response stating that the declaration was incomplete because the brief description field had not been filled out — despite it being marked as optional. I explained the context, supported by all the necessary certified documents, but my explanation seemed to be disregarded. The process appeared inflexible, robotic, and devoid of the empathy one would expect at a time like this.

Due to the rejection, my claim was closed via an SMS notification. I was unable to take more time off work to revisit the SAPS station and track down the same sergeant — an effort that had already taken multiple unsuccessful visits. Repeating this process was emotionally overwhelming and practically impossible.

It is hard to believe that the staff handling this case could fully grasp how agonizing it is to revisit such a tragic moment simply to satisfy a technicality — especially one that was optional. I urge Metropolitan to review this aspect of the claim process and either clearly mark such sections as mandatory or train their staff to apply discretion and compassion when assessing them.

No grieving family should be forced to relive their trauma over and over due to rigid bureaucracy. What was supposed to be support in a time of sorrow became an added layer of pain. I do not wish this experience upon anyone, and I sincerely hope my appeal will inspire a more humane approach for others in future.

There is still no resolution to my late mother’s claim — only more obstacles.
In stark contrast, another reputable and compassionate insurer I held a funeral policy with supported our family through this ordeal and settled their claim promptly.

The delays and lack of empathy from Metropolitan have compounded our grief. The financial burden on my stepfather became so unbearable that, overwhelmed by grief and hardship, he took his own life today.

I trust that Metropolitan will finally find it in their hearts to act with compassion and bring this matter to a just and humane conclusion.
