The most pathetic insurance company on earth
Hi there. My Name is Danielle. I have been a client of Metropolitan for almost 11 years now. I took out a savings policy with them in March 2006. Last year June 2017 I was unemployed and my policy went into arrears. In October 2017 i was told there is an arrears amount of R2114 that needs to be paid urgently for the policy to be reinstated and back up to date. I made the payment at the beginning of November. I called them to say I made the payment. They reassured me that the policy will be reinstated as soon as possible. It was at the end of December that I called again to find out if everything was done they then told me the payment was not received. I waa told to email the proof of payments to them. Fine, must have been around the 15th December I still heard nothing from them I decided to call myself. Then I was told the payment is on the system but cannot be allocated until I send a hand written letter to inform I want the policy reinstated. To me this is utterly ridiculous because out of the 4 times I called not one of the consultants told me about any forms or letter that needed to be filled in. Fine, send these documents through. We went on holiday and upon return in January I had still heard nothing. I then once again used my own phone to call in. I was told the documents were not received. At this point I am completely losing it and running out of patience. I retrieved the documents from the Metropolitan office in Kimberley and send the documents from my own personal email address. Another week went by thereafter hearing nothing. Again I called in. Completely frustrated because clearly they are *********** of doing their jobs. Apparently they are only consultants. So what does a consultant do? I am the client. They are supposed to offer me a solution as to what to do next. Anyway the last straw, i was told that the policy was lapsed and that I had surrendered the policy. He then continued to ask me did I receive the money and how much. I mean seriously. You work for Metropolitan, you can see your system but you are asking me if I received money amd how much. Firstly I did not surrender anything and no I did not receive any money. At this point I am beyond frustrated and have no patience left at all. He then said he would escalate this problem. Two days later they refunded me the R2114 I paid in November. After fighting, going up and down faxing and emailing documents and numerous phone calls just to be refunded the money. Which still doesn’t solve the problem because the policy is still not reinstated. You want to tell me that I will not receive even half of the premiums back? After being a client for 11 years this is the type of service I receive then I never want to have anything to do with Metropolitan ever again. The most pathetic service I have ever received in my life. I will never recommend them to anyone ever. So basically all the money I paid to Metropolitan over R20 000, they were supposed to be saving me money, but instead they just took my money. Basically I donated money to Metropolitan. So please, who ever has a policy with them, I urge you to please cancel it. You are making the biggest mistake of your life. You will not get your money. Metropolitan you are absolutely pathetic. Thank you for nothing
Dear Danielle Vermaak
Thank you for raising your concerns with our office. We apologise for only posting our response now.
We refer to the emailed correspondence with one of our Assessors.
We acknowledge that there were problems with the reinstatement of your policy.
Please however remember that frequent withdrawals on an endowment policy reduces the investment fund. Thus when premiums are skipped and there isn't sufficient money in the investment fund of the policy to cover the missed premiums that accumulate, the policy lapses - these lapses are referred to as Non-Fortiful Account surrenders (NFA Surrenders), to differentiate them from ordinary lapses. It does not mean you surrendered your policy but that the policy lapsed due to premium and/or loan debts. Please accept our apologies if anyone misinformed you that this was a surrender.
Though we regret that your reinstatement was not successful and this has caused you disapointment, we cannot agree that you have lost out on your contributions. You enjoyed the proceeds of the transactions you did on the policy over the years.
We trust that the above clarifies matters for you. We hope to be of service to you in the near future.
