Retirement Annuity Investment gone wrong with Metropolitan Life
I took a Retirement Annuity (RA) Plan with Metropolitan Life in July 2006. In 2019, one of the financial advisors visited me in my office to give an update on separate investment plan I had with the e company which matured in August 2019. I requested him to increase my premium for the RA with R220 since I was going to have extra funds on my disposable income. To my surprise, the premium for my RA was increased but with a new policy number. I have made queries with Metropolitan client service centre at Wonderpark Shopping centre and I was informed that the funds were transferred from my old policy i.e. ***to the new policy number. I was satisfied with the response. However, yesterday a financial advisor or consultant from Hatfield Client service centre called me yesterday, 20/01/2025 to review my policy. I asked him what happened to the funds from my previous RA policy, and he indicated that the policy was cancelled at the "request of Head Office." I did not understand what this meant because I thought the cancellation can only be done at the request of clients. This resulted to me being unsettled. I decide to visit the Wonderpark branch again. I was given a letter with a breakdown of what happened to the funds to policy in question. I was surprised all the funds amounting to R 41 502.68 were all taken by Metropolitan Life under the pretention that the policy was unpaid for couple of months resulting to metropolitan deducting unpaid funds from the RA value. At present the policy has-R 7256.70 which means the funds have been depleted. This is surprising to me because Metropolitan never made effort to communicate with me.
I would like to know what happened to those funds as both Head Office and Client Service Centres unable to provide me with a proper response except the vague letter with a breakdown.
I am also disappointed with the stupid question from all the consultants I have been engaging with saying " why did you wait for too long to make the query." Such questions are either here nor there because even if I asked or made query in 2050, it does not vindicate Metropolitan for irregularly using my funds to pay for the so-called outstanding premium from RA with letting me know
In addition, I am considering cancelling some of the products I have with Metropolitan because they are playing dirty at the expense of people's hard work.
We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.
From what you have indicated, it seems like the one Retirement Annuity may have been converted into a new one.
With a conversion, the old policy is cancelled and the balance of the money in the investment fund is transferred over to the investment fund of the new policy.
This being said, one of our Escalation specialists will investigate and revert back to you directly, as soon as possible.
