Nothing dignified about Metropolitan Funeral Policies

I have to agree with Hanlie. My mum paid for a funeral policy and we had to wait for more than a week for them to pay the funeral director, only to find out that there is a tremendous shortfall of funds. Their promise of a minimum amount of R10000, not true! She paid a small amount for close on 28 years and they did not even pay out half of what she paid them! A disgrace. There is nothing dignified about the way they treat a deceased client or their family! I will never ever recommend their services to anybody I know, ever!!!

 Dear Karin

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint.

Thank you for the additional information to trace the policy.  we note that it is the same policy Hanli posted her complaint about on HelloPeter,.

Please bear in mind that a Funeral Group Scheme policy is a risk insurance:  Funeral policies do not build up a cash value or fund value the longer you pay the policy premium like an endowment policy / savings policy would, .

On a funeral policy you are covered for the full amount from  the start date of the policy:
  • there may be a waiting period applicable on natural causes of death:
      *  this is usually a 3-month period, in which the member and family will only be covered in the event of accidental causes of death
       *  cover for natural causes then commences in the 4th month from the policy start date
  • there may be supplementary benefits like spouse cover (usually equal to the member's cover
  • there may be an additional (free) life cover for the member only
       * applicable to age 65 only
  • there may be accidental death cover for all participants older than 14 years
*which may expire at age 65

The sum total of the availalble policy benefits could therefore very well exceed what has been paid, in this instance.   You should howevere bear in mind that not all the benefits apply to each claim.

The claim was only received on 18/6/2019 and was paid on 26 June 2019.  We sent proof of payment to Hanli, via return email, after receiving her HelloPeter complaint.

We agree that we do strive to finalize funeral claims received locally at branches within 48 hours (2 working days) and those received from across the country at our Head Office, within 3 - 5 working days.  We have a 95 % success rate of achieving this goal.

Your mother's claim was however only finalized on the 6th day.  This was one day more than our goal of 3 -  5 working days.

We are however investigating what caused the delay in attending to the claim in the estimated 3 - 5 working days and will be addressing discrepancies identified in line with our internal protocols.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Regards

Client Care Team
