Nightmare Experience with Metropolitan Life

Good day, My father passed away on 31 May 2020 and I informed metropolitan regarding it so that I can claim against the policy . The consultant that assisted us was very unprofessional in the way she dealt with our query, she even shouted at me while I was trying to explain to her the situation. The consultant confirmed incorrect benefits – this has led us to commit to the family that we can contribute R10 000 as confirmed by the consultant We started the process on Tuesday 2 June and we received our fund of R5000 in our bank account a week later and not in the 48 hours as stipulated on the sms sent to the mobile number. We borrowed money to cover our confirmed amount and could later only pay back 50 %. Mr Metsing of Metropolitan contacted me regarding the bad service, he confirmed that the consultant was rude and agreed that the consultant confirmed incorrect benefits. There excuse was that the system was offline when benefits were confirmed. They later offered us an additional R2000,00. I’m not happy with the outcome as I have incurred additional cost of R5000 due to the incorrect benefits, along with the psychological stress the whole situation created, and it seem, is still taken very lightly by Metropolitan as a business. A situation that was supposed to be handled in a professional and respectful manner turned out to be an absolute nightmare.

Dear Mrs. Wood.

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPter.

We regret to learn that you have encountered difficulties with the claim for your late father on your husband's policy.

We have assessed the call and acknowledge the consultant confirmed the incorrect parent's sum insured.  Our Contact Centre's management is addressing the incorrect information provided byt he consultant in line with our internal protocols to ensure it does not happen again.

It remains a basic principle of insurance that cover is provided (by the insurer) in return for premiums paid by (or on behalf of) the insured.

When you husband took this staff group scheme and each time he reviewed his policy, we posted him an updated membership certificate confirming the benefits on his policy as well as the premium he would have to pay for such benefits.

We are therefore of the view that your husband ought reasonably to have known what cover he selected for each of the participants on the policy - first his parents, later for your father when he added his father-in-law and even later for your mother when he added his mother-in-law to his policy and that he selected a different sum insured for your mother than his other parents were covered for.

Unfortunately the consultant who assisted you encountered technical problems and instead of asking someone else to assist you looked up the information on an alternative system and made a correlation error in the process, reading out the mother-in-laws cover instead of the father-in-law's cover, which was listed above it on the screen.  We don't use this as an excuse, but wish to sketch the circumstances to you under which a completely human error occurred.

When we paid your father's claim, we paid your husband the benefit he app**** for and that he was payingpremiums for.  Paying any more in terms of the claim is not contractual and would be unfairly enriching your husband, at the expense of our other policyholders, which would not be treating them fairly.

We are aware that contact centre management have been in communication with you around this matter and has offered an amount in compensation for the poor service.

The above being said, one of our Client Care Assessors will investigate all the facets of your complaint and revert back to you via return email.

Regards

Client Care Team

Good day,

If we received updated membership certificates as stipulated above we would never contacted you to confirm our benefits. You also still had my husbands old email address. In my last email I requested that it should be updated.

You are only focusing on the incorrect benefits confirmed but forgetting the unprofessional and very insensitive manner the call was handled. We also received the funds almost a week later and not in the 48 hours stipulated. I'm not happy with the statement you making "enriching my husband " - If your consultant confirmed that we will received R5000 we would have confirmed with the family that we can contribute the stipulated amount. We are out of pocket by R5000 due to your consultant incorrect information.

Your urgent invention will be much appreciated.

Regards,
Angela Wood

Good day,

It's been exactly 3 weeks since my nightmare started with my Metropolitan Life. The resolution for this query is still outstanding. This is a clear indication that treating customer fairly is not top priority.

Angela Wood
