Misinformed by financial advisor
I took out funeral cover from Metropolitan on 16 September 2017 for my husband, myself and 3 children aged 19, 14 and 11. It was agreed that my 19 year old would be covered for R20000, and the little ones under 18 for R10000. I asked for the first premium to be deducted on the 31 October 2017. I then received a letter in October stating that my September payment was not paid. There was numerous mistakes on the document. My one son's date of birth was wrong, and the other son's name, our address, and the cover for my 19 year old was also R10000. I messaged the advisor and he assured me he would rectify the mistakes. I then went in to the branch to make sure he rectified it. My 19 year old passed away on 13 January 2018, and it went uphill from there. I was told that the cover for my son was only R10000. And that it will take 2 weeks for accidental benefits to be paid out. Which I was also informed that the accidental would be double that of my cover, which was again not true. After I have been told that my son was only covered for R10000, the advisor still assured me that its R20000 cover. When I submitted the claim, I explained about myself being misinformed and the claims lady told me that has got nothing to do with her, and I should be happy that I'm still getting paid out. She then gave me the number for their complaints department. I went to the long term insurance ombudsman and will take it further. Two weeks my son had died, I received R9666 payout. I spoke to two managers about me being misinformed and they just apologized. I am very upset and can't believe that a reputable company like Metropolitan would treat their clients like this. It has been another two weeks that I am still waiting for head office to investigate whether my son's death was an accident or suicide , yet I submitted the police report and post mortem results. Metropolitan is not true to their word.
