We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.
We are sorry to read about the delays surrounding the claim on your sister's policy.
Please be advised that claims on Retirement Annuities do take much longer than claims on individual life policies and funeral policies.
This is because Retirement Annuities fall under the provisions of two pieces of legislation (the Pension Funds Act and the Income Tax Act), whereas individual life policies fall under the provisions of the Long Term Insurance Ac t.
As such, a mere nomination of a "beneficiary" is not enough to distribute the proceeds of the policy. Under Section 37c of the Pension Funds Act it is necessary for us to distribute the proceeds of a Retirement Annuity Policy to the legal and financial dependents of a policy owner.
Sometimes it takes long to trace these relatives and we require different information from the nominees/dependents to determine their level of dependency, which ultimately guides the Board of Trustees in their decision on how to distribute the proceeds.
Requirements from nominees/dependents might include, but is not necessarily limited to the following:
This being said, one of our Client Care Assessors will investigate and revert back to you as soon as possible regarding the claim on your sister's policy.
