Metropolitan Not Paying Policy

Hi there,

My family needs your help, my father had policies with Metropolitan and he passed on the 19 of May 2018. The executor is awaiting for you to pay out to wind up the estate. Metropolitan has only paid two of my father's policies and left out 1. Why are you holding onto the other policy funds??? Now you telling my mother to go get a letter from pensions what does that have to do with my father's policies with Metropolitan? ( He had my mother as a sole beneficiary and his pension has paid out).

Can you please urgently assist, it has been 5 months now and we waiting for Metropolitan to pay all other financial institutions have paid to the estate account. We just don't understand why payout 2 policies out of 3 and leave out the other one? We have tried calling and doing follow ups, we will now resort to social media to ask for assistance.

We need this finalised as we want to do tombstone unveiling ceremony for my father as in a months time it will be a year since he passed. Please get in contact with our executor (Senzile Makhanya Director-SQ MAKHANYA ATTORNEYS) **********

My father's ID is ********** 637082 ( Mr Cleopas Ntuthuko Ndlovu).

Dear Thembeka

Thank you for the additional information that allowed us to trace the policy you are referring to.

Please note that the policy with the outstanding claim is a Retirement Annuity policy and therefore subject to the provisions of the Pension Funds and Income Tax Acts respectively.

This works differently from life cover and endowment and funeral policies, in that these are subject to the Long Term Insurance Act.  As such, we can pay out death benefits on these types of policies to the nominated Beneficiary on the policy or the Estate of the insured, etc.

With Retirement Annuities we are compelled to pay to the insured's financial dependents - not the deceased's estate.

This is why we require all this additional information, so that our Board of Trustees may establish who the insured's financial dependents were and determine their level of dependency on the insured.

When our Board of Trustees makes a decision on how the death claim proceeds are allocated, they have to take all these factors into account to distribute the proceeds in terms of Section 37 of the Pension Funds Act.

This is then also  why such a claim takes longer to process than our other products claims do.

We trust that the above will enhance your understanding of the product and reason for additional information required and delay in being able to finalise the claim.

Regards
