Metropolitan Life the worst insurer in SA

Metropolitan Life must be the worst insurer I have ever come across.

My name is Leletu Ntanjana - Gabula, my late mother passed in Jan 2021, she had a funeral policy with Metropolitan, when I put through my claim documents in Jan, I was told that there is no beneficiary named on the policy, which I found strange as I am the only child. I assumed Metropolitan did a mess up when they almost closed shop in mid 2000s but ok.

So I was told to get a letter of executorship, while busy with my mothers estate, I finally received the letter beginning of July. I have resent all the necessary documents including the letter of executorship. Between Pillar and Post, Jack and Jill, calls, emails, social media, till todate not even as a sms to say, we are busy with your claim has been received by me.

I'm jumping taxi violence finding my way outside of home to get basics and have informed Metropolitan that the R15 000 payout is a need not a want yet, no one at Metropolitan Life has assisted. Instead they keep giving me a "in 5 working days it will be sorted" story.

These people knew my mother passed in Jan as info was sent then, half a year down the line, they still want to give me a run around.

Metropolitan Life should have just closed in the 2000s then it would have been best as I would not have to be dealing with this ****gery type of behaviour when the time came to payout.

Yhooo, I will tell everyone NEVER TO USE METROPOLITAN AND IF THEY HAVE EXISTING POLICIES TO CANCEL THEM AS THEIR NEXT OF KEEN WILL HAVE TO JUMP HOOPS TO GET SORTED.

Dear Lelethu

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.

We are sorry to read of your mom's passing and the difficulties around submission of the claim.

Not all funeral plans have beneficiaries:
  • If there is no beneficiary, we firstly have to pay to the spouse, who is legally liable for the costs of the funeral.
  • If there is no beneficiary and spouse, we can then pay directly to the funeral undertakers or the person who can prove that they paid for the costs of the funeral.
  • In the absence of the above, or if another policy has paid for the funeral we can then lastly pay to the estate of the deceased insured person.

One of our Client Care Assessors will investigate the matter.  We apologise for the delays experienced thus far and will revert back to you as soon as possible.
