Metropolitan life sucks....non payment of the policy
The level of service that we have received from Metropolitan this far is really disappointing.
We went to the Metropolitan branch in Thohoyandou on the 20th June 2017 to enquire about the documents required to submit a claim after the Retirement annuity policy holder has passed on. The following day (21 June 2017) we went back with all the documents and a claim was submitted. The policy had beneficiaries.
We enquired several times and we were told that the claim is in progress. Almost 5 month later Lungisile Zulu (Center agent) informs us that for them to process the claim they now require the following:
We require written consent by Spouse/family member for Metropolitan to obtain info from the employer – What information do you require from the employer? Require proof of school/college - The only person who is still studying is my younger brother and proof of registration was submitted together with other documents requested in June. So for Metropolitan to request this document again indicate pure incompetence. or if disable (specific details regarding disability) – No one is disabled so this is not necessary. Letter from pension fund stating to whom pension was paid or will be paid or if not paid yet – This policy had its own beneficiaries and we don’t understand what would be the link between the pension fund and the Metropolitan policy. Also we don’t understand where does this new requirements comes from, it was never part of the initial requirements communicated to us.
I also submitted my details on the website for the unclaimed benefits and Cwenga Ngedle contacted me. He then asked Lorna Bomvana to assist and Lorna in turn ask Nicolene, Enrico and Mariana to assist but till today no one has contacted me.
I also submitted a request for the tax certificate and few days later I received a tax certificate from Glenda Isaacs indicating that there was no contribution made but when I check the bank statement, the policy holder was paying an amount of R1 100 until end of May 2017 which means there were contributions made until end of the financial year. So now for some reasons Metropolitan cannot account for these contribution. So where did the money go???
Seriously dealing with Metropolitan is a pain….
Dear Tenda Murudi
Thank you for raising your concerns with our office.
We always strive to serve all our clients well and regret to learn of your poor client service experience.
One of our Assessors will investigate and revert back to you shortly.
We do however wish to comment on part of your complaint already. You mention that there were beneficiaries appointed on the policy.
Please note that though ciients are free to indicate beneficiaries on their Retirement Annuity, Retirement Annuities are governed by the Pension Funds Act 24 of 1956.
In terms of Section 37C of the Pension funds act, the trustees have to ensure that proceeds are distributed to the financial dependants of the deceased.
As such, we may require additional documentation to identify who the financial dependency to the deceased member are. In so doing we ensure distribution of proceeds to the deceased members financial dependants and conform to the provisions of the Act.
Therefore these claims typically do take longer than distribution of proceeds to beneficiaries on a life cover policy.
We apologise for the delays encountered so far.
We trust that the above will provisionally explain some of the delays and additional requirements requested.
Please rest assured your complaint is being treated with the utmost urgency.
