Metropolitan Life has complete disregard for privacy and are quite happy to violate POPIA

Metropolitan Life is in violation of POPIA. I did not consent for them to market to me regarding any of their products or services.

After several missed calls from their telesales team, I finally answered one and kindly instructed them that they are in violation of POPIA and not to contact me again. Not even 2 minutes after this call, I received another call from them, whereby I got into an argument with one of the telesales ladies as I requested that she remove me from their database as this is a violation of POPIA and she advised that this could not be done.

Again, I proceeded to tell this lady that I did not consent for them to have my data and she proceeded to argue that they are in their rights as they had purchased my data. Regardless of this, now loosing my temper at the basic disregard to my privacy, I made mention yet again of POPIA and asked who they purchased my information from so that I could directly contact the source, however she proceeded to tell me that it is from one of my accounts. Now, I do not have accounts apart from my bank account, so how exactly did they obtain my information and at what point did I concent for them to contact me to market their products, nevermind the blatant disregard of my privacy?

I again asked to be removed from their database and the lady said it is impossible (complete violation as I should be able to opt out from communications from them).

So where do I stand and how can I stop people from buying and selling my information, yet alone having 10 calls in one day from telesales marketers from the same company?

Where is the respect of my privacy from a company like this?

I am fed up and tired of these forceful calls that waste my time and simply get on my nerves as I am not interested in their offerings.

Dear Kaylynne-Leigh

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint.

Did you know you can log your complaint directly with us:

  • Tel:  *** or *** (switchboard)
  • Email;  ***
  • Web:  www.metropolitan.co.za

We believe you are misunderstanding the POPI Act:
  •  Calling you to market products is not a violation of POPIA.
  • Divulging your personal information to anyone else or another entity would however constitute such a violation.

We purchase client lists from reputable data-houses to market our products to targeted groups of people.

We are an accountable institution and before we call someone from these client lists, we check the clients' ID numbers provided by the data-house against the National Opt Out Register as well as our own Do Not Contact register.

We do not call clients on the lists that have registered on these platforms, as they have indicated they don't want to be contacted by us/withdrawn marketing consent.

If you don't wish to be contacted by us again, you are welcome to provide us with your ID number and contact number/s so that we may add you to our own "DNC register".

You are also welcome to register on the National Opt Out register.

One of our Client Care Assessors will email you directly to obtain your details to place you on our register and provide you with the link and details to register on the National Opt Out register.

Please bear in mind that the client list currently in use by our telemarketing divisions for the current campaigns being run will still have your details on, as it was already checked against our and the National register.  Therefore you may still get the odd call from this campaign.

However once you've been registered, you should not be receiving calls for future campaigns.

We trust that the above clarifies your understanding of POPIA and the Opt Out processes/registers at your disposal.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused.

Regards

Client Care Team
