Metropolitan is a ****mer

To Whom It May Concern:

Writing this review is NOT easy, but I have to write it regardless. In my life I had seen big corporate industries taking advantage of vulnerable or marginalized people simply because they are expected to agree and be submissive.

I am writing this review on behalf of my late sister (insured) and her daughter (policy holder) as I was just a premium payer in this policy. The policy holder had just called (spoke to Meshack) and was told that the policy was within the 3 months waiting period while I have already paid 3 consecutive premiums.

When we called yesterday, firstly we were told that the policy had lapsed as there was no premium received. Then the consultant checked on another system and told us that they could locate the premiums paid and the policy had money in advance, and later told us the policy was cancelled.

The policy was going to be deducted on the 15th of every month from the policy holder's account and I paid a cash amount of R468 mid February 2024 and 14 March 2024 with the third payment being R663 on April 18, 2024. All these cash payments were done at Pick n Pay.

When the policy holder opened this policy she was with me at Grahamstown branch and was NEVER given any policy documents either a hardcopy or an email sent regarding policy documents. The ONLY thing we were told was that policy will commence on 15th February and so are the premium deductions. Now when the policy holder went to Grahamstown branch (02 May 2024) after the pass on (28 April 2024) of the insured and after 3 consecutive payments, she was told that the policy did not reach a three month waiting period.

This is merely their tactics to avoid paying the benefits that are due to the policy holder to prepare for her late mom's funeral. Some consultants had guts and were not ashamed to tell the policy owner that should her mom have passed on May 01, 2024 the claim would have been 'valid'. However, the monthly premiums were NEVER paid on the 1st as they were paid on the 15th.

These insurance companies are ****ming people when it comes to pay out, they try everything they can find in order not to pay beneficiaries. For as long as we as people don't expose them, they will continue with their dirty tricks. I had another insurance who was trying to take their chances. The delay was due to me after my late cousins passed on with me and paid six consecutive premiums.

If the Metropolitan cannot resolve this, I would appreciate it if they could furnish us as a family with details so that we can escalate the matter as soon as possible as we are planning to lay the deceased to rest asap.

Regards,

Mzwandile Dwani

I am still waiting for Metropolitan's response if they are a 'reputable' insurance as they also claim to be 'top rated service winner' in 2023/2024.

Dear Mzwandile

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.

We are sorry to read about your sister's passing.  Our sincere condolences go out to you and your family during this time of bereavement.

Please be advised that a waiting period is a period of time in which an insured life is not insured for some or all events, like death to natural causes.  These are imposed in order to keep the cost of insuring a life as low as possible and with as little as possible effort for our valued clients.

We point out that waiting periods don't depend on the number of premiums received only, but also the time that has passed since inception date of the benefit.

One of our Escalation Specialists will investigate your complaint and revert back to you as soon as possible.

Regards
