Metropolitan didn’t pay me what was agreed upon

I Nkululeko F. Mthembu would like to lay a formal complaint against the claims department and also the department responsible for premiums

I have been a member of Metropolitan since 2007 when I started working for Transnet. My premiums have always been deducted from my salary and I have never missed a payment.

In November 2021 I lost my son Uminathi Mthembu and when I went to claim at the Pinetown branch I was told that I will receive R20 000 because this is an unnatural death but instead I was paid R7400 which is not the amount I was expecting.

When I enquired I was then informed that my premiums have not been deducted from my salary since June 2021. I was never made aware of this. I never cancelled my cover or instructed my employer or Metropolitan not to deduct premiums from my salary.

When I queried with HR from Transnet, I was made aware that it is the responsibility of Metropolitan to send a schedule of premiums that are supposed to be deducted from an employees salary and since June 2021 Metropolitan has not been sending this schedule, as a result premiums were not being deducted from my salary. This though is not my fault as I am not the one responsible for making sure that the premiums are deducted. It is the responsibility of Metropolitan to make sure that the schedule is sent to Transnet and in the event that the premiums were not being deducted Metropolitan was suppose to inform me, of which this was never done.

They pay out I received is not the payout that was agreed upon when I took out the cover. I have made several calls and tried to escalate this matter with different people from Metropolitan but this matter is not being finalised. This whole process has been a very strenuous one and I still have people that I have covered under Metropolitan, should anything happen to them I don’t wish to find my self in this position again.

I would like to demand that:

1. Metropolitan settles the balance of my double payout 2. Sorts out this issue of outstanding premiums 3. Makes sure that the schedule is sent monthly for premiums to be deducted from my salary

Thank You Mr. N.F Mthembu
