Loss of funeral cover benefit due to loss of income during lockdown
I had signed a funeral insurance policy with this company since 2011 . I had covered 3 of my uncles , 2 from my paternal side and 1 from my maternal side. I have never defaulted with my premiums . I had been paying R825/m. I am self employed and when lockdown started I could not earn an income , my last premium was paid end of March. I went to the Branch office on the 08 May to request that I be given a payment holiday so that I sort out my finances, I was told that the company policies do not allow that , so if I fail to pay a premium my policy wil lapse, I argued that the situation we as the whole world found ourselves in , was a disaster and could not be avoided, so the company should at least consider making a provision for loyal clients like myself , the Lady Branch Manager indicated that the company does not have such a provision. I left the office frustrated but without a solution . My frustration was that one of my Uncles from the paternal side was seriously ill in hospital whilst lockdown was commencing , so I was concerned that anything was possible at any given time.Fortunately he is still alive. My shock came when I lost the uncle from my maternal side due to Covid 19 and the policy had already lapsed. When I was sharing my experience with one of my cousins he advised me to take the matter with the ombudsman, and I decided to go back to the office so that they can provide me withe the date I had visited the office, in order for me to lodge the complaint . The lady I spoke to when I visited the office the second time on the 04 August indicated that when I visited the office on the 08 May my policy had not lapsed, a policy lapses after it has not been paid for 3 months , so the advice they should have given me was that I should try and ensure that my premiums are less than 3 months in arrears, so that if anything happens the policy has not lapsed but when I am given the payout the amount in arrears would be deducted . now I have lost R825*8 years . I am angry , I wish I had not had an insurance with them , hence I a naming and shaming them .
