Dear Sonke

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.

Please note that a Retirement Annuity falls under the provisions of the Pension Funds Act and Income Tax Act.

As such, we as the insurer have a duty to consider all the deceased's legal and financial dependents when deciding on the distribution of the proceeds.
  • Typically these claim assessments take longer than a death claim on a funeral policy or life cover policy.
  • Often, family dynamics are different from family to family and as unique as each of our valued policyholders are from one another.
  • Therefore it is not possible to know ahead of time all the requirements that we may require.
  • We subsequently often need to request additional information to assess the claim, as information unfolds regarding dependency on the deceased.

In accordance with Section 37C of the pension funds act, we have up to 12 months to finalize a Retirement Annuity death claim.  We do however  realize that the family needs the proceeds and therefore do try our utmost to finalize it as soon as we possibly can.

One of our Client Care Assessors will investigate and revert back to you as soon as possible.

Reviewer Update
All the relevant documents were submitted and when I call they say it's still waiting for the board of trustees to decide how to distribute the funds amongst the dependents. My question is how come it takes so long for the board of trustees to seat and discuss this..?
