*** - Metropolitan Funeral Plan (Onelisa Mpulwana)
I started a funeral policy less than a month ago, roughly three weeks ago. I got my policy documentation on the first of July.
The when signing up, I requested not to be contacted by them for any promotional products that they might have. If I need something I'll just reach out to them.
This morning, I get a call from an agent telling me about some cashback benefit, I politely refuse and ask that I get removed from the list to avoid me getting any further calls that are similar to this. She drops the phone on me as I'm explaining this.
Fine, I then reach out to my "Financial advisor" from metropolitan, Onelisa Mpulwana. I explain what just happened and ask her to please remove me from the list. A simple enough request one would think. Then I get asked all kinds of questions like why don't I block the number etc. I explain my reasons mostly revolving around my work and the clients. This is through whatsapp.
She then goes on further to explain why it's not within her realm. What? Are you telling me you can't open a request to remove me from whichever system that's responsible for just getting my number removed. She goes on to saying that I can cancel the policy. I ask her to cancel the policy and she says that SHE CAN ONLY OPEN THE POLICY AND IF I WANT TO CANCEL I MUST CALL THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT LINE. And then she drops the line as on me well.
Wow. This has been a ********** experience. All because of not wanting to get telemarketing. Do these people realize there's the POPIA that is active as of the first of this month? Let me sleep on this but from what I've experienced, from the two interactions that I've had, it appears as if this is the culture and if that's the case, that would be a shame.
Coming to think of this, on the whatsapp conversation, Onelisa was using voice notes instead of typing what she was saying. I guess that's a strategy to avoid screengrabs of what she's saying to her clients I'm not sure.
For the first 6 years of my career I was in insurance myself, both long and short term. I'm well aware that my request to not be contacted for new products is not an impossible ask.
Thanks Metropolitan Life but I will be cancelling my policy with you if this is the treatment I'm to get on the first month of actually doing business with you.
We acknowledge receipt of your complaint on HelloPeter.
We are sorry to of the difficulties you experienced in order to be added to our 'Do Not Contact" (DNC) register.
Did you know you can register on the Direct Marketing Association's National Opt Out Database?
As a responsible insitution, Metropolitan checks client information purchased from datahouses against this database and our own DNC register to remove clients' who don't wish to be contacted from our marketing campaigns.
Whilst we may not be able to remove you from marketing lists already in circulation for existing marketing campaigns, we will try our best to locate the call and so trace and remove your details that way.
We will also be able to add your details on our DNC register, as soon as we have obtained your ID number to do so.
Please don't publish your ID number on this site as our Client Care Assessor will contact you directly to obtain the information and have your ID number and cell number added to our DNC register.

We are sorry to learn of the delays you encountered with the refund of your June 2021 premium after cancellation.
Please note that a stop order deduction does take about two months to activate or to cancel due to closing dates for the magnetic tapes to be compiled at our end and closing dates for implementation on your pay-office's salary runs.
Similarly we receive one bulk payment from your employer, followed by a payment schedule to distribute the bulk payment amongst all our clients policies that also pay their policies through your employer. Often the premium is only allocated to each employee's policy/ies around the middle of the following month.
This being said, one of our Client Care Assessors will investigate and revert back to you as soon as possible.
