How my brand new Metabo power drill failed

I decided to purchase a Metabo power drill as I had a small job that required me to drill 8mm holes into concrete. I have had a Ryobi for about 7 years and have only changed the brushes once. I imagined that the Metabo would do the work and the Ryobi would be my back up.

I purchased SBE650 from a dealer on the understanding that 1/ It was an industrial strength tool and 2/ that it was rated to drill 8mm holes into concrete.

I managed to drill 2 holes and as I was wearing gloves, failed to notice that the machine was very hot. I unpluged it and put it aside. I continued drilling holes with my trusty Ryobi and almost finished. The Ryobi also got a bit warm so I swapped back to the now cool Metabo. After about 30 seconds the machine failed completely. I finished the holes with the Ryobi.

I took the machine back to the dealer who sent it to the Metabo service center in Durban. The service center informed me that the repairs will be more that the cost of a new machine.

I will never trust a Metabo again. I have subsequently purchased a Hitachi and it has worked flawlessly.

Beware Metabo is not industrial as they specify and the service and back up is not worth the effort. Stick to Ryobi for day to day DIY and the Hitach for heavy lifting.
