Sunroof Shattered While Driving – No Support from Mercedes-Benz South Afric

On 12 July 2025, the sunroof of my two-year-old Mercedes-Benz C200 spontaneously shattered while I was driving in East London. There were no vehicles around us, and no visible cause for the incident. Glass fell into the car, leaving a large, dangerous opening and rendering the vehicle undriveable. I reported the issue to Mercedes-Benz South Africa and was given Ref No. ***3. I was instructed to take the car to Ronnies Motors East London for a technical assessment. The car stayed there from 17–22 July. To date, I have not received a technical report explaining what caused the failure — only a quotation of R48,000 to replace the sunroof at my own cost. This is deeply concerning for a premium vehicle that’s just two years old. The lack of urgency, transparency, and ownership from both the dealership and Mercedes-Benz South Africa is unacceptable. This is not the first issue I’ve had with this vehicle: Within 6 months of purchase, it broke down due to a fuel pump failure. Later, it had a 48V battery issue, which still causes warning lights to appear. My trust in the safety and quality of Mercedes-Benz has been severely damaged. I am now forced to park the vehicle and cover the hole with tape. Despite repeated follow-ups, I have received no assistance or feedback from the brand that prides itself on luxury, reliability, and service. I am escalating this further through the Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa (MIOSA) and strongly urge others to reconsider their expectations when purchasing from Mercedes-Benz SA.
