Appaling - R5000 just to update the GPS Maps on my Mercedes Benz.

I visited the Mercedes Benz in East Rad to have my maps on my factory fitted GPS updated. my car is off motor plan. I was categorically told that because of this i will have to pay in excess of R5000 just to update my maps. this I find extremely perturbing, considering that google maps and the like are all free. I was told that the BMW does not charge for map updates even if not in motor plan. The Service Manager told me that there is a licence key that must be paid for so that the maps can be used. this is ridiculous. what is so different from the free google maps to that used by Mercedes Benz? there is no other benefits besides access to the maps. Even products like Waze, which uses the latest maps with a lot of benefits are free. So why do I need to pay just to update my map. another cheap way of making money. We as owners and users of MB products should be given the free regular updates of the maps, or even have a feature where we can update it on our own via the internet. This I find absolutely ridiculous.
