Menlyn Shopping Centre is a Theft Haven

<p>On the 17th of December 2016, I visited Menlyn Park Shopping Centre briefly to make a few purchases. I live near the centre so I decided to travel by bicycle. When I arrived at Menlyn I locked my bicycle to a pole, in the parkade nearest Food *****'s Market, with a chain. I then entered the centre for 20 minutes and when I exited the centre I noticed that my bicycle had been removed. A Parrots Restaurant employee witnessed the theft and mentioned that the ***** led him to believe that the bicycle was his and that he had lost the key to the lock. The ***** cut the chain with a bolt cutter. </p> <p>I notified the security and was then directed to the parking office to report the incident. I completed a document describing the incident and submitted it. I was then notified that because it was nearing 18:00 that the security personnel would be going off duty and I was advised to return the following day. It was an inconvenient time for me to report the theft of my R10 000.00 bicycle (which could have been avoided if the mall's management and security had taken simple theft prevention measures). I returned the following day for feedback on the incident and I was told to complete another form, which I completed, to request feedback.</p> <p>A week has elapsed since the incident and even after submitting two formal requests, I have not received any feedback. </p> <p>The security guards that assisted me on the day of the incident mentioned that they suspect that the ***** is a regular perpetrator at the Mall and that many bicycles had been ******. Why has a central bicycle rack with security supervision not yet been installed? </p> <p>Also, when I returned to the mall on the day after the incident I noticed that many of the security guards were chatting casually while on duty.</p> <p>My perception is that Menlyn Park Shopping Centre has a theft problem and managment are not implementing measures to address the problem. Perhaps the management of the mall do not take the safety and security of mall's patrons seriously. </p>
