Meg's Marine Service Disappoints and Runs!

I hired Meg's Marine Services, operating out of Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay, to refurbish the interior of my sailboat. As agreed in the proposal, I paid 70% of the total invoice upfront, which, according to Megan Du Plooy (the owner), included the cost of materials. Megan committed in writing to complete the project within three weeks.

However, after almost three months, less than 50% of the work was finished.

Throughout the process, whenever I inquired about progress or raised concerns, I was met with a combative attitude that I found unprofessional, especially from a business owner. During my visit to the boat in August, I was shocked by both the poor quality of the work and the significant lack of progress. When I addressed these issues with Megan Du Plooy, her response seemed aggressive, with no willingness to take responsibility or ownership for the work performed.

Later, I received a WhatsApp message informing me that the completion date had been moved to September 2024. Additionally, Megan Du Plooy insisted that no further work would be done until more payment was received, contrary to our agreed-upon payment terms. I expressed that I was happy to make further payments once 70% of the work was complete and upon receiving proof that the materials had been purchased as agreed.

To my surprise, Megan Du Plooy responded by threatening legal action and informed me that she would no longer continue with the project. As a result, I was left with only 50% of the work completed, despite having paid 70% of the total cost.

I’m sharing this as a cautionary tale for anyone dealing with contractors at Zululand Yacht Club, as the club offers no safeguards for its members to prevent situations like this. If you choose to work with Meg's Marine Services, I strongly advise setting clear payment terms in writing and conducting regular on-site inspections before making any further payments, but encourage you to not make use of companies such as Meg's Marine Services.
