Repeated Adverse Reaction Due to Generic Substitution & Poor Medication Management
I am writing this AGAIN. And please don't tell me about an email sent once and used as an excuse to close query within 2 days when u have had the opportunity to inconvenience me for over 2 months. It's insensitive and inhuman. So here we go again because you where running your race to closing the previous review.
I am very disappointed at Medshield and/or their pharmacy direct administrator at how poorly they are managing my health by playing a tug of war with wording.
On 19 December 2025, I sent through my HbA1c results as requested by Auths. After that, I received notification that my Metformin 500mg was approved. I have been taking Metformin from Clicks for over 5 years with no issues.
On 24 December 2025, I received a medication authorization letter stating I was approved for MENGEN 500mg tabs (ongoing). When the medication was delivered, it came in a plain blue, brandless box with just a sticker saying “Metformin.”
Around 20/21 January, after taking just a few doses, my tongue started swelling with clot-like swelling underneath. I developed fevers and felt unwell. On 22 January, I went to my GP. The only new thing I had taken was this medical aid-supp**** medication. My doctor advised me to stop immediately and gave me a 30-day supply of Metformin that I have previously tolerated.
On 23 January, I sent my doctor’s letter everywhere — Auths, Halocare, Cladadmin. On 2 February, I was told my Metformin had been “updated,” and I was now authorized for MYLAN Metformin 500mg (replacing Mengen).
On 9 February, I received another delivery. Low and behold — the exact same packaging. Same blue box. Same everything. Just a different name on paper. Because we trust our medical aids with our lives, I started taking the February supply on 12 February 2026. By 14 February around 17:00, I had tingling in my gums followed by swelling. By 03:00, I could not sleep because my upper gums were so swollen and painful. So now I have had to see my GP twice due to pain and reactions caused by medication supp**** through my medical aid.
My question is simple: Will my Go Benefit cover the GP consultations that were required as a direct result of the medication supp**** and authorized by Medshield?
I should not be financially penalized for consultations that became necessary because of medication provided through my medical aid’s system.
I just want clarity on my Go Benefit and whether these visits will be reimbursed, as they are the direct result of this situation.
