Mediocre Medshield

The service, response, payments, decision making and feedback from this medical scheme is all extremely poor. Even communication to a higher level than consultants is non-existent. When calling customer care you hold for hours. While on my way to Mozambique I lost vision -my retina tore/ detached. I had to receive emergency treatment in Witbank, and several procedures thereafter, to ensure that my full sight is returned. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency in which you can permanently lose your vision.

"The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the inside of the eye and sends visual messages through the optic nerve to the brain. When the retina detaches, it is lifted or pulled from its normal position. If not promptly treated, retinal detachment can cause permanent vision loss. " - National Eye Institute

Not one bill has been paid by Medshield as they are "investigating" a pre-existing condition, which clearly in above situation is not the case and constituted an emergency. It has now after many calls and correspondence been escalated to clinical risk. One can't but wonder if the team making decisions about claims are qualified to do so. I would strongly advise people to avoid joining this medical aid at all costs.
