Inhumane treatment

The medical aid is refusing to authorise a kyphoplasty for a spinal fracture. The reason for non-authorisation was that the procedure is too new to be on the list of authorised procedures. The patient has been hospitalised since 11 August and cannot walk, sit or stand. She must be turned in bed as well to avoid bed sores. The medical aid is only willing to pay for a spinal fusion, a much more expensive procedure, which in her case will not be viable as the spine at T12 and L3 has collapsed and the specialist has recommended a balloon kyphoplasty as the better option for increased mobility. The patient has been in hospital 13 days without any recourse from the medical aid. This refusal for a treament that is cheaper than suggested by the medical aid plus the prolonged suffering of the patient while in hospital is the most shocking, inhumane treatment by a so-called organisation that is willing to take your money but cannot assist you when you are in need.
