Disappointment Regarding the Decline of Beyfortus Coverage

I am extremely disappointed with the decision to decline coverage for Beyfortus.

At the end of the day, approving this treatment would not only benefit my baby’s health but could also save the medical aid significant costs in the long run. If Beyfortus helps prevent a serious RSV infection, it reduces the likelihood of hospital admission, specialist treatment, and other expensive medical interventions that may become necessary if my baby becomes severely ill.

After consulting with our paediatrician, Beyfortus was specifically recommended as a preventative measure. The paediatrician felt strongly enough about its medical necessity to provide a motivational letter supporting the request and explaining the benefits of administering the injection to protect our baby from potentially severe illness should exposure to the virus occur.

Despite this professional recommendation and supporting motivation, the request was declined. As a parent, it is very concerning and frustrating to have a preventative treatment rejected when it has been recommended by a medical specialist and could potentially prevent serious illness, hospitalisation, and additional costs.

I respectfully request that this decision be reconsidered in light of the medical motivation provided by the paediatrician and the potential health and financial benefits of preventing a severe RSV infection rather than treating one after it occurs.
