3 months waiting period

so my sister joined my grandmothers medical aid she was accepted successfully but she was given a 3 months general waiting period this while she has just left a another medical aid without a break of more that 1 week. and other medical aids do not impose a waiting period if you do not have a break of more than 90 days. why does medshield do this.

Good day, With reference to your complaint. Kindly note, underwriting has been app**** correctly to Ms. Bhamjee’s membership. As per the Medical Scheme’s Act 131 of 1998 (MSA), a 3 month general waiting period is imposed upon any person in respect of whom an application is made for membership or admission as a dependant, and who was previously a beneficiary of a medical scheme for a continuous period of more than 24 months, terminating less than 90 days immediately prior to the date of application, a general waiting period of up to 3 months, except in respect of any treatment or diagnostic procedures covered within the prescribed minimum benefits. We trust you find the above in order. Yours sincerely, Karin Binstead Medshield Medical Scheme
