Hoogland Medic Clinic Bethlehem 7 – 9 August 2026 Review After three traumatic days in Hoogland Medic Clinic in Bethlehem, I battled to digest it, knowing I I had to deal with it. I postponed writing a review, the experience has been too traumatic. Three years ago, I had a procedure done and was admitted to the Orthopedic Ward. It had been super pleasant despite the circumstances of having to go to theater; to me it felt like 2 days in a spa – in so many ways it had been a pleasant stay as I stated in my review. Back at home I went through stages of anger, shame, shock; I had to work through emotions of anger, shock, sadness, vulnerability, shame... I tried to remind myself to rather focus on the positives – there weren’t many… Having been admitted to the emergency room – unexpectedly – what I do remember clearly was the care and compassion, professionalism – everything and everyone had been highly professional and caring. Every treatment and procedure had been explained to me. Everyone who attended to me introduced themselves and explained their function and the procedures. I was respectfully called Ms H…. And then I was transferred to the notorious Ward B. May I introduce myself – I am Patient 18/B. My next-door neighbor, a gravely ill Victoria M. Without going in too much detail, which I will eventually do in a full report, may I point out a few atrocities: • unprofessional behavior, rudeness, incompetence, disrespect, neglect, immaturity, violations of basic dignity, emotional abuse – it is referred to as obstetric violence, institutional malpractice and mistreatment and lack of leadership during my two days of horror. • Refusal or delay to answer service bell; at some time I discovered it had been pulled / disconnected. I had severe diahree calling for frequent visits to the loo. I was told I may not walk on my own – I even wore a yellow band, because, as I was told several times, if I fall the hospital will be held liable. • It also served as a reminder to please come and put the drip back since I had to finish the antibiotic, which by the way I could not finish due to long delays of ignoring care or duty. I probably had more than twenty attempts by unprofessional and incapable staff, trying to find a vein. When I started to complain that they were hurting me, I suggested they call the sister to please come and assist. However, the Sa morning the sister came to my bed, quite agitated, pointed some or other instrument at me, demanding she was attentending to a diabetic. I had not even wrung the bell. Afterwards she came to my room to apologize for her aggressive behavior. • Incompetence – it was a matter of trial and error with no success. I have had more than 20 “*****s” to try and find a vein – surely there should be a competent nurse who can do that? • My BP had to be checked at certain intervals; I myself were monitoring my blood pressure and oxygen level – it had been important to me. I woke up to the curtain between me and Ms Victora being violently lifted and some apparatus being pushed in. Next thing, a nurse stretches her full body across mine reaching for my arm – to take my blood pressure she told me. I asked her to please come to my right side – I would like to see the reading as well and the right arm is free. She disregarded my request, told me she was in a hurry, and grabbed my arm, strapped me in. Would you believe this? • Rude awakening – just after 4h00 Sa morning, all the bright lights were switched on, curtains ripped open, leaving all of us startled. I asked them please to consider us, as we’re still trying to sleep– I was told “We’re working now”! Abattoir style – like going to the market. I pulled the duvet over my eyes and tried to sleep. The nurse seemed to have reconsidered her actions, switched off the lights and gently closed the curtains. I overheard the staff talking about other patients complaining about the same. • I was refused my file – I knew what procedures where awaiting me and what preparations had to be done – I repeatedly requested them to please bring me the required solution so that I can proceed with procedure as soon as possible, I was booked for a colonoscopy. Now as I understand what is referred to as Coercive Threats and ************ is Threatening to withhold medical treatment, life-saving medication, or food if a patient complains, asks questions, or fails to follow orders immediately. • And then I realized, this is a class action. Professional nurses switched name tags with care workers, some removed their tags, such pathetic and immature behaviour as I was not taking down any names, although I have been requested to please write down the names – in fact, I have a few names written down, starting with the Cleaners – thank you for your respect and gentle kindness you extended towards me. Of course I need to mention the kitchen staff and their service – superb. Whoever prepared and dished up the meals – splendid. • One care worker had been sent to attend to me and see to my wiring and stuff although she confessed she did not quite know what to do – that she had been sent by the sister on duty. I asked her to please rather go find out before starting to fiddle with stuff both she and I knew nothing about. At least she tried… • The Saturday night, after several requests to please show me how to disconnect and reconnect to the drip so that I need not bother them and / or wait for them, the sister showed up at last, changed a few settings and advised me I can now push the trolley and need not wait for them. The only problem then was that I had been setup in such a way that I could not reach the oxygen, or the water beside my bed. I could not lay down, the tubes were tangled. I sat on my bed until 6hoo the morning and of course by then I was so traumatized that I bawled my eyes out. My precious neighbor Victoria M throughout the night tried to comfort/ console me in a soft and gentle voice. Please Mam, stop crying. And then Sibongile – precious Sibongile who visited my room, never spoke a word, just stood behind me with her hand on my shoulder. You are an angle! • Is it outright bullying to expose patients in their most vulnerable state – rip the curtains open and tie it back so that as one nurse explained to me, she needn’t enter the room to check on the patients – she only wants to see their feet?!? Is that not brutal neglect, laziness, or incompetence? I would think so. Are we not allowed respect, dignity, privacy – should we be permanently on display to passersby. • Poor Victoria took a bodywash – probably by choice, open curtains, no assistance, stark naked. I closed her curtains for her – she seemed so small and frail. She had no assistance. Not once during my stay did anyone visit her bed, except for the doctor and physios. • My son visited from afar and on departure he called and spoke to the nurse, and asked her to please keep an eye over me, his mother. She assured him she would, and in my presence, like a 6 year old, addressed the medical Professional “ Dokter, praat asseblief met hierdie ou tannertjie – haar koppie rafel uit”. How degrading, what lack of respect, not to mention character. • There all of a sudden had been so much commotion in my room, I just needed to spend time outside – enquiring about the exit. Eventually I managed to be taken outside after numerous warnings that I was not to walk by myself because if I fall, the hospital will be liable – maybe they should have rather attended to a patients needs. • Nobody came back to fetch me – I walked back. The same sister who shouted at me pointing an instrument at me, the same sister who put her arms around me, telling me she will personally take care of me, in the presence of the doctor, the same sister that never showed herself again. • Meanwhile, I had to drink the mix for the big flush – and asked so many times to please bring it to me. I am growing tired of trying to explain who and how many times and to whom. • And then, the circus arrived: I found myself surrounded by so many people, all staff. What for, I don’t know as I never spoke. One of the nurses, small and short, all of a sudden appeared shouting instructions, which I no longer heard – everyone was talking shouting at the same time. My legs collapsed and I sat down on the floor, the verbal abuse did not stop. I turned to her and asked her to please stay out of this – “That does it”, she said and off she went to call on the doctor, not sure why? Imagine the commotion. • When I asked for a blanket, I was told all the blankets were in the laundry. • I made my own bed – blue plastic mattress with no cover, and two lumps of malformed shapes – I take it that they are supposed to serve as pillows. • No drinking water beside the bed, twice one of the kitchen staff offered me a cup of tea. I have been one of many, I’m sure, patients exposed to Psychological bullying systemic emotional abuse, neglect, and violations of basic dignity perpetrated by healthcare workers against vulnerable individuals. Allow me to commend the angels that came across my path: Sibongile Ndladla Mpho Matsume Manakal Tladi Patrica Nale – the lady with the swallows… Thank you ladies, you made it tolerable.
