Shocking treatment of patients and their family at the High Care Unit of Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic

Dear viewers who love their sick family please listen to my story and take heed! My eldest sister is currently in the High Care Unit at Constantiaberg, battling to stay alive. Her story is long and sad. She was admitted on the 27th June 2019 and has a history of certain serious medical conditions. So I am not blaming the hospital for her pre-existing medical conditions, however, it is shocking to see the care my sister has received from certain nursing staff, in particular a nurse called Mabel Ayuk. Two nights ago I went to visit my sister in the high care unit. My nephews asked me to take pictures of two consent forms so that my sister could receive certain types of physiotherapy. My nephews were new to the steps to follow to get authorization and asked me if I could call the medical aid the next day. From across the passage a nurse name Mabel Ayuk shouted at me as if she is selling fish on the side of the street and wanted me to buy some. That is the best way to describe it. She stated that she has been telling the family to sign these forms and one of the family said they would sort out the forms. I said this was not me as I have not been here for two days. In a blunt abrupt manner she stated that this is a lie. She then approached us as we stood at my sister's bedside. My sister was actually doing well and was fully conscious. This nurse then raised her voice and started addressing us like a mother scolding her children. I am a professional adult aged 45, yet this nurse seemed to think that I needed guidance on how to go about to get approval for treatments from my sister's medical aid.. She then went further to ask whether, like other families , we would be letting the oldest child take charge. This was all done in front of my sister who was able to speak and make decisions at the time. As she continued shouting in her raised voice my sister's blood pressure increased by 7 digits. My sister shook her head and was visibly upset with this nurse's manner. Last night, 11th July my sister was moved to a general ward, however, her condition was worsening. She could barely speak and referred back to this incident to tell me again how the incident upset her. Today, 12th July I was informed that my sister's health deteriorated and that she was moved back into the high care unit where this nurse, Mabel Ayuk works. In all the previous occassions when I visited my sister we were allowed to visit her until after 8 pm and we were told that they will allow us there until 9 pm. So tonight as we came at 8 pm a nurse inside the unit told us that my sister is getting a bath and we can just wait outside until she has finished and then see if we can see her. When we entered we were met by the rude nurse Mabel Ayuk again standing at a distance and telling us that visiting hours are done by 8 pm and "she is concerned for her patient." A family member who accompanied me then told her she has an attitude problem. She then became volatile and started raising her voice in front of all the nursing staff and very sick patients. I finally decided that I was no longer going to let yet another incident in this hospital go unnoticed. I then told her that on all the other nights when we visited we always stayed after 8 pm. She then stated that this was a concession. So I stated that how does she think we should know that suddenly the concessions have ended. I am disgusted at this "professional" nurse with her ****y demeanour. She then walked right up against my chest to force me to step back until I reached the exit door. She then saw me glancing at her name tag so she lifted it up, shoved her finger in my face and said that "my name is Mabel Ayuk so that you know who to complain about while adopted a swagger movement of her body! I said that I will take it further. We then spoke to the night manager who then called the high care unit and said that we are coming up to see my sister and that this nurse should not speak to us. We even told the manager we don't want to see the nurse near my sister when we come up and we don't even want to disturb my sister. We just want to pray for her and look at her. When we got to my sister's bed this nurse was speaking to my sister saying the following "don't cry and don't let your bp go up when you see your family" while almost lying with her heavy- set body on my sister, waking her up! I have no words for this arrogant behaviour and I find it shocking that patients who are already in a critical condition have to be treated in this manner, let alone the loved ones who are concerned about their sick family. We have complained about my sister's care only a few days prior to this. Yet it seems as if every complaint is swept under the carpet and that the high care unit seems to be a law unto themselves, operating separately from the rest of Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic. The doctor is forever on leave or if not on leave you have to battle to get feedback from him. What a disgusting hospital! My sister would have received better care at Groote Schuur for a reduced fee!
