Private Hospital - Bad service from the nurse

On the 13th of July 2016, I entered the emergency room at Vergelegen Medi Clinic for treatment of a painful shoulder, ear, stomach-ache and chest. So I was called into a room where you explain the reason for visiting, the nurse asked all those questions so that she can send my folder to a doctor. I told her that I am here for painful shoulder, ear, stomach -ache and chest pains.

She looked at me in a bad way; “Just mention one thing cause I don’t know what to write in your folder, you are giving me so much sickness, it seems like you don’t know why you are here”, she said. And she stares at me. I rep****: “Nurse please write what I’m telling you because that is the reason why I am visiting, do you think I would waste my time coming here without knowing why I am here, please don’t give me tough time nurse”.

After writing my folder, she then gave me a urine container to go and urinate. She then tested the urine. And told me to go wait outside, remember her voice was not friendly at all and the facial expression she gave me I cannot explain. The treatment she gave me was very bad. I am still annoyed even today.

I waited for two hours while in excruciating pain before being admitted into the examining room. I asked the securities to call the nurse who assisted me because I have been waiting for so long with no assistance. No answer provided, and the most annoying part is that more than five patients who came after me were coming in and out.

All I know is every patient or client has to take care of his or her own health. I have the right to access to health care services that include –

Receiving timely emergency care at any health care facility that is open, regardless of one’s ability to pay ;( The nurse made me wait for 2 hours with no reason as to why).
A positive disposition displayed by health care providers that demonstrates courtesy, human dignity, patience, empathy and tolerance; (Nurse did no show self-respect to me).
After 20 minutes I asked for assistance again, the male nurse came to cheer me down, and he explained why I’m sitting there for so long. He said probably your folder is marked: Green that means you are not in critical condition. My question was “why the female nurse did not address that to me?”, because she is the one who was helping me, nevertheless I was calm and then the male nurse made sure that I got help. This means she intentionally mark green in my folder.

He went back to find me a room, 4 minutes later he came back to me and he arrange me a bed to rest while I am waiting for the Doctor. As I was coming from the waiting room, going to the examining room the nurse was just sitting on the other side she looked at me and she smiled, in my mind I am sure she was saying “yes I got him”. Just bear in mind you arrived at the private hospital at 15:20 and there is no one at the waiting room and you got helped at 17:30 in fact you just go to and sit at the examining room, 17:45 the doctor came.

He then asks questions immediately he diagnoses me and he performed the ECG. Around 18:20 ECG was done, I dressed up and then I went to collect my medication. Remember I still need to walk to a taxi rank with my daughter and my girlfriend and it was dark outside, our life is in danger because you hardly see people walking at that time.

We arrived at the taxi rank at about 19:00 we got the last taxi. Thanks to God there was a taxi. Just imagine if we didn’t get the taxi, what would have happened to us? Just because of the nurses who does not care about our lives. The mistreatment I got at medi-clinic made me feel like I don’t exist, I am not a human being or maybe medi-clinic is not for “Black people”. If they judge patients because of their colour it is better to have a note saying “Whites only” so that I cannot bother going there for help.

Even at the public hospitals I was not going to wait that long. The sad part is that I am paying for visiting the hospital, and then received that bad treatment from that nurse; I don’t get the treatment for free. The nurse made me feel like I don’t have right to life.

Since I suffered unnecessarily, I would like to know that the nurse who attended to me in your hospital have been reprimanded for this negligence.

“Medi-clinic would like to ensure that our patients experience the best possible care within our facilities”. This is a strong point to everyone who visits your website. This sentence makes any customer feel welcomed before visiting your facilities, but the nurse did not comply with this sentence but this is what medi-clinic is saying to its patients.

I have asked the Hospital to kindly let me know what, if any, action will be taken in this case. Everyone has the right to complain about health care services, to have such complaints investigated and to receive a full response on such investigation.

This letter was sent to Vergelegen Medi Clinic. The person in charge of the Hospital called me, he apologised about the incident occurred to me. He told me that he is going to get back to me, since then I have not received any further communication.

Kind regards

Simphiwe Mtyenene.
