Pathetic patient care.

Medi Clinic PIetermaritzburg On 27 September 2018, patient Praveen Singh, was admitted for a hemorrhoids removal procedure. This was carried out on 28 September. on 29 September 2018, he had emergency surgery due to having a perforated bowel. He was subsequently placed in High care until 4 October. After which, he was transferred to the surgical (B) ward. The night nursing staff of this ward are utterly unprofessional, arrogant and have a complete don't care attitude. On several occasions, the patient required to use the toilet at night (he was able to walk), his drip was disconnected, and he was left to carry his VAC by himself. Nurses do not check if the patient requires any assistance and he was left to move in and out of bed by himself. Whilst being in Surgical B ward, the patient was relocated 5 times within the ward for outrageous reasons. It genuinely gave off the impression that he was just being pushed out the way. On 12 October 2018, the patient had a prolapse and further emergency surgery was conducted. After which he received the most hospitable care from the Cardic ICU (the level of care that PMB Medi Clinic used to take pride in). On 16 October 2018, he was transferred back to the Surgical B ward. Repetitively, night nursing is appalling. Night of 16 October: Drip went off at aprox 1am, patient was told that it is not working. It was only reconnected the next morning. (without any difficulty by day staff). The VAC powersupply was disconnected and the battery had died. This to was only reconnected the next morning. The patient was left to reuse the urinal the entire night. (He was unable to walk) Night of 17 October: (Patient is able to walk with assistance) 19:40: Night staff, after taking over 7 minutes to respond to the patients alarm, come into the room, and ask the patient why can't walk to the toilet by himself. The nurse was advised that the VAC was still connected. (In the presence of visitors). The nurse being disgustingly inexperienced started yanking the VAC trying to disconnect the power supply and was pulling the drainage pipe in the process, whilst the patient was in visible pain from this process. The nurse should be trained in this process and also be aware of the severity of the surgery that the patient had experienced. He is unable to restrict his bowel movements and her complete lack of urgency frustrated the family immensely. Night staff are appallingly arrogant. These complaints were addressed several times with the unit manager. However, the unit manager is only there during the day and ensures that day staff efficiently carry out their services. On several complaints to the night operations manager, we (patient's family) were told that this (medi clinic) is a hospital and not a holiday resort. It seems that night staff of Surgical ward are not aware of this being a "hospital." The level is service is absolutely shocking. I have witnessed more professionalism and better nursing services at public health facilities.
