Medi Clinic and

I am utterly disgusted by both Medi Clinic and Discovery Health. I'll try to keep my story short: My son was involved in a serious accident en route from George to Botswana on the 16th of December, the public holiday. My wife by accident drove over both his legs with our 2 ton plus SUV. Needless to say he was in absolute agony. We rushed him to Medi Clinic in Kimberley where he was treated by the doctor, sent for X-rays and eventually to the prosthesis guys for orthotics. He had damage to his ligaments, severe swelling, and pain to this day. He had to hobble around Botswana the holidays wearing a moon boot and two crutches, but we were just too glad the ligaments were not torn and there were no fractures. We could go on. However, when we arrived back home from the holidays we received numerous outstanding bill of accounts for thousands of Rands from the above mentioned medical practitioners. I phoned Discovery Health to find out why we were/are not covered. The explanation is that it had gone of my medical savings account and it, my MSA, is reached the point where it was depleted. The outstanding amounts has to be paid out of hand. They said my son was not "admitted to hospital" and that "the hospital did not request an authorization code". Apparently the situation was judged (by someone unknown) not severe enough to warrant admission (not withstanding the fact that he was sent for X-rays and got all the robot gear). They say, when either of these two instances occur, Discovery clears you medical savings account in stead of paying up. Also, they say, the ER functions separately from the actual hospital (I think maybe an affiliate of KFC) , so when you walk through those doors it is not considered to be part of the actual hospital. You have to pay from you MSA and ultimately out of hand. I spoke to the doctor on duty at Kimberley ER today in desperation and when I asked him how they classify the severity of an accident and whether the patient is "admitted" (LOL) or not, to which he offered: "We have to follow the protocol." Funny thing is he could not tell me what the protocol actually is and very suddenly he had to leave. So, if you are with Discovery Health, think twice about taking your injured child to Medi Clinic, even if it is hundreds of kms from your home, in an unknown city, after hours and on a public holiday. Pray you're entire family is not injured. Even then they will ***** you over. They have a protocol somewhere for it.
