Disgruntled, humiliated new mum
My expereince with medi clinic Morningside Johannesburg was disappointing, tasteless, dissatisfying and humiliating. I had found out that I was pregnant at 6.5months, recently moving to Jhb from durban and had cancelled my medical aid. So to our shock of the pregnancy the financial stress of finding a hospital that we could afford for my birth was added surprise. After doing due diligence in investigating fees medi clinic came out to be the best. I had went in to enquire the hospital qoute which the clerk had printed for me and it stated R15 400 for c sec × 4days. 2 weeks closer to the time I was requested by my gynae to book my bed which I did , verified the amount again with another clerk and he confirmed it was correct, Also asked if I had to make a deposit or any payment to which he responded that payment has to be made before we are discharged from hospital, which was a pleasant surprise. So Hubby and I had saved the funds , ready for delivery on the 19 July 2022. On the morning of the 18 July I had started contracting and was rushed in for an emergency c sec, the doctor had booked and had me prepped in 15mins. However I was stuck in the corridor awaiting to be taken to theater as my husband could not obtain my file from reception. They demanded that he make double the payment that we were quoted and that a file will not be released until payment it made immediately of the full R28 400. They blantly told My husband that their staff are there for more than 10years and will never make such an error and it is his word against theirs. With the gynae downstairs waiting for the file andto determine what the hold up was, someone from reception called the labor ward to inform them that there is an error with the bill and they can not release file, the nurses are now gathered taking while I sat in the bed, contracting and crying from the stress. I even messaged my husband and asked him if we should just leave in the middle of labor and find another hospital , eventually my husband was forced to pay the full amount and then only did they allow me to be moved to theater and I was shaking so much from stress and crying whilst trying to sit still and get my spinal epidural. It took 15mins for my baby to be born she kept on moving away and they could not get her out and I believe that this was from me being distressed. Today we receive a call stating that the hospital will give us a R5000 discount as a courtesy from being overcharged by R15 000. I now am home, not being able to enjoy my baby or heal as I am now stressing that I can not afford to pay my Gynae who was amazing and the anesthetist due to the over charge from the hospital. To the admissions surpivisor and Mrs Koek the admissions manager that were so inconsiderate to our situation and emotionally detached , your service is pathetic and the trauma you have given my family and I through this already difficult situation will remain with us forever and I pray no expecting parents have to go through such humiliation as your hands. You have taken away the last experience I had of birthing aswell as valuable bonding time with my new born. All I want now is for the hospital to rectify this and charge me the original price quoted and allow me to settle debt incurred to other due to your inability to correctly do your job and start focusing on my new born.
