Several aspects of my McDonald’s visit caused alarm, starting with the lobby manager, Philisiwe’s accusatory customer service approach at the top of my experience in the store. The worker seemed to take issue with the length of time it took me to place my order once I’d entered the restaurant and sat myself down. Despite my justification, my experience devolved in the ensuing seconds after she mockingly called the staff manager, Silindile’s attention to the impasse. The interaction was as unfriendly as it was distasteful, leaving me taken aback by the level of disregard characterised by her interrogatory tone. Her adversarial demeanour threatened to devolve into a war of words and, feeling rushed and overwhelmingly unwelcome, I reiterated that I would place an order once I could access my device. Shortly after, was taken aback by Silindile’s abhorrent insistence that customers were not allowed to occupy a seat in the restaurant for longer than half-an-hour.

Little could I have predicted that my experience would suffer further indignity, this time courtesy of Nicole’s prejudicial customer service, who, as a flexi crew member, delivered orders and cleared the tables after patrons had eaten. I observed several instances in which Nicole, who did not wear a name badge, treated other patrons with greater friendliness and a warm, welcoming presence than others. Apart from failing to clear my table after I’d had my order and continued to sit, she did not check in on my satisfaction with my now-done order, making for an unpleasant overall customer service experience.
