Standard Bank Credit Card Collections

Good Day
I refer to your abovementioned Client, who is my Mother - her ID number is ****** ***X XX X. According to my Mother, she has not received statements pertaining to her Standard Bank credit card for several months. However Standard Bank contacted my husband (Mrs ****** Son-in–Law) on several occasions via SMS regarding an outstanding payment on a credit card, although they were in possession of my Mother’s contact details and should have been calling/contacting her. My husband was under the impression they were messaging regarding his own Standard Bank credit card, which he knew had been settled. He, therefore, ignored the SMS's, assuming that they would eventually realize that the card had been settled.

We ultimately realized that these SMS's were, in fact, regarding my Mother’s credit card, after we verified my husband’s credit card number. When I advised my Mother that there was an amount outstanding and she received a letter from the bank, dated 14th April 2017, she went into the bank and made a payment of R***-XX on the 2nd May 2017. The Teller who dealt with her confirmed that this was the TOTAL AMOUNT OUTSTANDING on the card. She has not used the card since then, however, she has recently received SMS’s from the bank again saying that she needs to make a payment. I called the bank on her behalf on Thursday, the 15th June 2017, as she is currently staying at my home. The bank advised me that her account had been handed over for collection and said that they were unable to confirm whether there was a balance outstanding on the account, nor what the amount of that balance might be. I was told that I would need to contact the Collections Attorneys and obtained the contact number for them.

The first number given to me by Standard Bank, which was 011 ********** , went straight to voicemail. I phoned Standard Bank once again and asked them for an alternative contact number. They said that the only other number they had for the Attorneys was 011 ********** , which I called. I held on for a long time, listening to a countdown of what caller number I was in the queue. Having waited for several minutes and having made it all the way down to Number 1 in the queue, I then received the message saying “We are currently experiencing high call volumes and cannot take your call – please leave your name and number and we will call you back”. I did this and left my mobile number – not once – BUT THREE TIMES!!! I have still not received any call back!

My Mother, however, received a call from what sounded like a call centre, but she was unable to hear or understand what the person was saying and neither could my husband, who was at home with my Mother at the time. The caller put the phone down after a few minutes of incoherent babbling and we have not heard anything further. The level of unprofessionalism in the handling of this matter is STUPIFYING!! My Mother is 80 years’ old and physically went into the bank, in good faith, to make payment in full of this credit card account and she is still being harassed by you!

All we now require from you – either the Collections Attorneys or Standard Bank – is the following:
Confirm what – if anything – is still owing on this account
Confirm the bank details into which we should make payment
CLOSE MY MOTHER’S STANDARD BANK CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT AND DO NOT ISSUE ANY FURTHER CREDIT CARDS!
We do not wish to have anything further to do with either of your organizations and we will be sharing our experience on Hello Peter!!
