This has been the worst experience of my life!

After MS' telehealth medical ******** failed, I had to perform a surgical ******** at the Pretoria clinic. Majority of my questions weren't answered or were answered inadequately. I was given a form to fill in explaining the process to me instead of the nurse doing it. The procedure itself was extremely painful and traumatising. No local anaesthetia etc were used and the nurse damaged my uterus during the procedure. She showed no care, turning the music up and singing louder with every scream of pain I gave, begging her to stop or give me something. No sonar was done afterwards to confirm that all the remnants were removed. I had to be rushed to emergency care and was admitted afterwards. During the emergency care, a sonar and blood tests were performed that still showed remnants of the pregnancy, worrisome blood results, as well as my uterus showed trauma and bruising. I had to be given additional antibiotics to fight off the infection and strong painkillers. I am unable to sit, stand, or walk at the moment. Besides the costs to Marie Stropes, I've had to pay close to R7000 in medical bills and have lost nearly R2500 in income this week as I am not able to work.

I developed a womb infection, and after consulting with two gynecologists and receiving emergency care, they raised concerns that there is a significant possibility the equipment used during the procedure was not properly cleaned or sterile. This has led to me incurring almost R8,500 in medical expenses over the past week to treat the infection and its effects.

Dear Marie Stopes Team,

On two occasions, I received calls from an unrecognised number while I was actively being treated for a womb infection, which I did not answer as it had no association with Marie Stopes. During a recent conversation with your Managing Director, I felt that the response to my situation was dismissive and lacked sensitivity.

While I understand that challenges arise, being told that "luckily a woman’s womb is resilient" came across as an attempt to minimise the emotional and financial strain I have endured. I have incurred expenses totalling R8,500 for hospital visits, consultations with gynaecologists and general practitioners, as well as antibiotics and pain medication. Additionally, the statement that "at least" I only spent one day in hospital overlooked the fact that, while I was only admitted for a day, I spent an entire week seeking treatment at two different hospitals, a general practitioner, and two gynaecologists.

Both the gynaecologist and the general practitioner informed me that had I delayed treatment, I could have faced an emergency hysterectomy or even risked death. From what I was told at Marie Stopes, had I not experienced such unbearable pain—so severe that my whole body was shaking and I was crying and screaming—I likely would have left the issue untreated, as the form I read essentially stated that the symptoms I was experiencing would be normal. This could have resulted in a far more critical situation.

Additionally, I had to endure victimisation during my hospital stay for the procedure. My character was attacked, and I was humiliated and dehumanised, which only added to the trauma of an already difficult experience.

Moreover, the comment that the Managing Director could "hear from my tone" that I am on the road to recovery, coupled with her reference to her 20–30 years of medical experience, made me feel as though everything I went through was being overlooked. I realised halfway through the call that it wasn’t going to address anything I had to say, what I experienced, or the trauma I had endured. At that point, I stopped participating in the conversation because it became clear that my concerns weren’t being acknowledged. In fact, it would have been better to receive no call than one that left me feeling dismissed and unheard.

Whilst I appreciate the apology offered, the overall tone of the conversation minimised my experience and left me feeling disrespected.

I hope this feedback will help improve future patient interactions.
