Beware the Manitowoc Ice Machine!!!

In November last year I put in a new bar that cost me R150k. It included a Maitowoc ice machine. I started to have problems with the bar and blamed the installer and cabinet maker. After 3 months, I have now found the source - it is the Manitowoc ice machine. Apparently it has a gravity fed waste water system and needs to be installed correctly by an approved installer otherwise it leaks gallons of water behind the machine, in my case into the dark recesses of my built in bar. The entire bar has to be rebuild at massive cost.

Unfortunately for me, nobody told me this until after the fact that this was necessary or that even this was a risk. Manitowoc glibly sent me a message saying that "they're sorry but can do nothing because it was not installed by an approved installer", ie blaming me that it was my fault that I neglected to do something (i.e. spent R150k on the bar, but saved R500 on an "approved installer"). If they told me this beforehand, or that this was a risk with the ice machine, and I ignored the advice, this would then be my fault, but they did not - they just sell these machines and hope for the best. The average man in the street bears the risk.

Beware of these units lest you have the same experience. They are also quite loud during operation, so don't install them if that will be an issue for you.
