Mango Airlines Does Not Assist Aged Lady
I booked a flight for my grandmother from Durban to Johannesburg on Mango flight JE262 suddenly due to a family emergency.
She is 78 years old, has osteoperosis and recurring pain due to an ankle operation. I usually select the wheel chair assistance option when booking tickets. In this particular case, I did not have the option online as the booking was done less than 72 hours before the flight. I called the call centre and was told that it would have to be done at the check in counter.
At the check in counter, I was told by the Mango check in staff that there is a limit of four wheel chair assisted passengers per flight and that the limit had been met.
There were +/- 20 vacant wheel chairs around the area at that time. Despite all my attempts to organise a wheel chair just to the boarding gate and from the arrival gate in JHB, I was not assisted at all.
She was in severe pain in the days succeeding the flight due to the long distances that she had to walk as a result.
She returned with Kulula and did not have any problems.
Should I not fly with Mango in future emergencies??
What about a patron that may be injured after check in on a flight with max wheel chair occupants?
