Read this before buying a TV from Makro!
17th October 2025: I bought a TV from Makro East London for R6,499. They unpacked it in the store, switched it on and it looked ok. They repackaged it and carted the TV on a steel trolley outside along the paving, onto the tar road, and loaded it into the car. 18th October 2025: When we set it up at home there were lines at the top of the screen. I called Makro. They said I must not bring it back to the store - they would send out a technician.
30th October 2025: A Hisense technician came to the house and used a special instrument to diagnose a hairline crack in the top right of the screen, and declared that this made the TV "out of warranty". The technician did say that the TV's were "very fragile". An SMS later that day stated the log had been closed .
6th November 2025: Having had no further response from Makro, I then emailed the same 2 people at Makro with whom I first logged the call for help to resolve the issue.
10th November 2025: Having received no response to my email, I called Makro. The lady who answered listened to my problem and said she would ask the TV Manager, Daylin to call me back as he wasn't available at that time.
14th November 2025: With still no response I called Makro again and asked to be out through to the TV Manager. This time I got to speak to Daylin Thomas, the TV Manager. Daylin told me very directly that the moment I had viewed the TV, it became solely my responsibility. He made it lear that regardless of the Makro staff having handled the TV thereafter, in no way would make accept responsibility. When I asked if there was any way I could escalate this, he said my only recourse was to take it to the consumer commission. Daylin Thomas was very unsympathetic, and talked over me whenever I tried to speak. He is obviously far too busy to listen to customers, and insists that his staff can never damage a TV.
So here I sit with a cracked R6,499 TV, and one of the country's largest retailers simply refusing to assist me in any way.
I note with interest that there is a similar TV complaint against Makro dated 12th November,
Had Makro warned me that the TV was "very fragile" and that I would not be able to return it once it left the door, I might have preferred to to have it delivered and set up in the house by Makro themselves. This of course is ridiculous. I have moved house numerous times, moved TV's many times, and never had a problem. I never treat a TV roughly.
Makro staff, however, can trundle the TV on a steel trolley along bumpy paving, off the paving onto the tar road, and load it into the car, and claim no part in the handling of the TV at all. It's all the customer's fault.
I am now forced to go the long road of lodging a formal complaint with teh consumer commission,
Given this experience with Makro, I suggest srious caution next time you think of buying a TV from Mako!
