No consumer protection when buying a $#!t washing machine

I have had a terrible experience trying to return a washing machine to Makro. I purchased it, and only used it once to test it, I found that it did not spin well and tried to return it during their 14 day window. They then refused to refund me because the product had been used the one time I tested it (even though it is still in brand new condition), sent a technician to test it out, and the technician effectively said 'it is what it is'. Is there no protection for consumers when buying products? I needed to use the machine to test if it works, found that it didn't work well enough, and now they do not want to refund it because it was used. How was I supposed to know the machine came with a $#!t spinner?
