Makro won't let me return a defective Trimtech **** eater after 4 days and 1 use!

I recently purchased a Trimtech 650w electric **** eater from Makro Ottery (30/3/21) with intent to trim the edges of my front lawn.

After about 30 minutes of trimming the edges I noticed that the plastic line (which cuts the grass) started to feed on it's own without tapping the bottom on the ground...

Subsequently the whole line was used up! On inspection the ****l had broken and plastic was worn AFTER JUST USING IT ONCE and I had not even completed the yard...

So I decided I'd like to return the unit as it must have been defective or of really poor quality, however when I reached Makro Ottery on (3/4/21) 4 days after I bought it, I was told it was wear and tear and they'd need to have it assessed in order to have it returned but they doubt I'll be able to exchange it.

I mentioned that I only had the unit for 4 days and used it once so it still falls under the consumer protection act which allows you 7 days in order to return an item back to the store if something goes wrong, the woman that assisted me said Makro's store policy does not coincide with the act which makes no sense to me.

This is the first time I've ever returned an item to Makro, I've returned items to many other retailers with easy exchanges and no hassles... I don't see why this case should be any different. If you sell something defective or of substandard quality you need to take responsibility for what you put on your shelves.

Yesterday I received a call from the guy who works in the gardening department saying that Trimtech (the supplier) says it's wear and tear and won't be able to replace the unit and Makro is not willing to credit me on the item or do an exchange for something else.

I then told him to let the manager call me as I don't have time to deal with something that should've been dealt with on the spot and with more professionalism in my opinion.

Depending on how Makro handles this return will make the difference on whether I buy from them again, I'd hate to be stuck with another defective item that they just outright refuse to take responsibility for.

Makro, if you value us as consumers you\ll do the right thing and conclude the return and give my money back.

Update:
Makro sent me an sms yesterday 8/4/21 (***) stating that my approval is required for a quote to repair the product which they now expect ME to pay... I told the Makro Care consultant who responded to my complaint that I do not want the thing to be assessed.

I want either a refund or a credit to choose a better quality item that won't break after being used once (even if I have to pay in a cash difference). This level of service is unacceptable and the way that Makro refuses to take responsibility is shocking! No wonder they have a 2.6/10 rating on Hellopeter, it just shows how poor their customer service is overall.

As the South African public we shouldn't stand for large corporate companies like Makro making fools of us, we're already have the government for that!

I'm utterly disgusted in Makro and won't accept this type of service. I swear the corner superette would have treated this matter better!

I'll update this post once I've heard from a manager or a senior employee.

Update: This is an email I sent to Makro today in response to the repair quote from Trimtech for R367.

Hi Zwelakhe

How can you people expect me to pay R367 for a repair on something I paid R699 for and used once? Obviously the thing will be scratched at the bottom, the purpose of the **** eater is to trim edges so it has to come into contact with the ground, I've used lots of these before and this is the first time this has ever happened to me.
In addition I've seen multiple reviews on defective Trimtech products online which broke and both Makro and Trimtech refuse to take responsibility for the poor quality of their products claiming that the user is always at fault.
Here's an example: https://complaintsdb.com/complaint/laetisha-nel-13955
Like I said before, I don't want them to repair the thing. I want a refund, if you refuse I will take further action to expose the disgusting attitude Makro has towards the rights of it's customers especially with us being in a pandemic.
You can check your records on my Makro card, I've NEVER brought anything back to Makro for a refund before so I'm obviously not bringing it back for nothing.

Do the right thing and process a refund so I can buy another unit at a better outlet and from a better brand.
